Born shortly after his father entered the White House, John F. Kennedy Jr. was the crowned prince of JFK's Camelot. But this adorable boy knew tragedy early: His father was assassinated in 1963, as was his uncle Bobby in 1968. Aristotle Onassis, his stepfather, died of cancer in 1975. But Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis made sure her son didn't let the tragedies ruin his life. Although Jackie wanted her son to become a politician, he resisted. Following his mother's death in 1994, he quit practicing law to launch the political magazine George. Then in 1996, he broke hearts around the world when he married Carolyn Bessette, a publicist for Calvin Klein. In July 1999, John, his wife and sister-in-law were flying to Martha's Vineyard when their plane disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean. Five days after the plane went down, the Coast Guard found the aircraft and its passengers at the bottom of the ocean. Once again, the nation grieved for the Kennedy family and the loss of their prince. What You Don't Know:• After JFK Jr.'s birth, the Internal Revenue Service issued a press release announcing the Kennedys could take an additional $600 deduction on their 1960 tax return. • Kennedy lost a front tooth when he banged into a step while playing in a big dollhouse on the White House lawn. • Kennedy got his first paying job at the age of 24, as a $20,000-a-year assistant to the New York Commissioner of Business Development. • Kennedy once attended a Manhattan Halloween party as Michelangelo's David. He wore white tights, and his chest, face and hair were covered with talcum powder. • Kennedy had a fear of having his pocket picked, so he always attached his wallet to his pants with a chain. • Kennedy learned to speak Greek after his mother wed Aristotle Onassis. • In preparation for his role as editor in chief of George, Kennedy attended a three-day seminar called "Starting Your Own Magazine." • Kennedy and Bessette's wedding song was "Forever in My Life," by Prince.
