Spears Fears Princess Di Fate

Britney Spears has a simple explanation for driving around with her baby on her lap: She doesn't want to become the next Princess Diana.

As she attempts to rehab her image after getting caught on film behind the wheel while holding an otherwise unrestrained Sean Preston--and in the process becoming an unwitting poster girl for how not to transport an infant--the pop tart plays the paparazzi card in a new People magazine interview.

"I don't really go out with him," Spears, 24, says in the issue, on newsstands Friday. "And it's kind of sad because I can't walk down the street with a stroller. I'm not expecting people to pity me. I'm just telling the truth."

She continues: "I've pulled over and asked the cops, 'Could you please help me? They've been driving recklessly back there.' And they say, 'Sorry, ma'am, I can't help you. This is how it is.' "

"I mean, Princess Diana got killed by one of these people. They're crossing the line."

The "Lucky" singer says of her now notorious Feb. 6 baby-driving incident, "I love my baby more than anything, and as unfortunate an experience as this has been for me and my family, if it brings more attention to child safety then I fully support that."

Initially , Spears said she acted "instinctively" to protect her son. As the furor failed to die down, she copped to Access Hollywood that she "made a mistake."

That wasn't enough for parents groups or even U.S Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta.

"No matter who you are, there's absolutely no excuse for this display--not instinct, not fear, not even reckless paparazzi," Mineta said in a speech earlier this week. "It's irresponsible to compromise the safety of a child for the sake of the moment."

Spears has a long history of antagonism with shutterbugs. One photographer was hit with a projectile, believed to be a BB pellet, while scoping out the singer's Malibu home in August. TMZ.com reported last week that Spears dispatches her bodyguards to run interference for her--and sometimes run the paparazzi off the road--in an ongoing game of cat-and-mouse.

Meanwhile, Spears, who insists in People that she is not bitter, says she misses recording and touring and has been preparing a new album in her home studio for release later this year.

She is currently working on a guest shot on NBC's Will & Grace, which airs in April. Her next public appearance will be at the Mardi Gras celebration. The Louisiana native will appear live from the New Orleans fest on Good Morning America next Tuesday.

"I'm not going to be performing," she tells People. "I thought instead that it'd be more meaningful if I surprised a group of girls to spend the day with them doing things that I used to like to do in Louisiana when I was younger.

"I know it'll be such an emotional trip, but it will also be uplifting to see the city continuing its traditions."
