Ghana thinking way ahead; 2015 African Games, 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2032 Olympic Games bids

The Minister for Education Youth and Sports from Ghana, Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, speaking at a national cycling awards presentation, laid out plans for Ghana to bid for several big events over the coming decades, according to TheGhanaHomePage.

Baah-Wiredu first mentioned the intent for Ghana to look at hosting the African Games in 2015, after last month mentioning wanting to look as a bid for the 2011 games. After that, Ghana would bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the 2032 Olympic Games and the 2052 World Cup.

Ghana is scheduled to host football's African Cup of Nations in 2008, and according to Baah-Wiredu, the West African Games in 2005, with the hopes that by hosting these two events successfully, other events would follow.

Ghana hosted West African University Games in 1967 and 1973 and All African University Games in 1974.

Ghana moving forward with 2011 African Games bid

Abuja's This Day newspaper is reporting that Ghana's Sports Minister, the Honorable . Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu completed a tour of Abuja's sports facilities earlier this month as part of Ghana's continued exploration of a bid for the 2011 African Games.

Baah-Wiredu told reporters that Ghana essentially hopes to create the very same kind of facilities in Ghana, and that six proposals have already been received from construction companies hoping to win the contract to build the stadiums.

Ghana is scheduled to host the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in football, and stadiums for that event are being upgraded, and could be used for a 2011 African Games. 

Ghana has hosted few international multisport games, hosting the 1967 and 1973 West African University Games and the 1974 All African University Games.

Ghana and Nigeria announce Friendship Games revival

Ghana and Nigeria have reached an early agreement to revive the Ghana/Nigeria Friendship Games which were held annually for a period during the 1970s.  Hosting duties were alternated between the two countries.

The proposal is to bring them back in April of next year, with the goal of providing more opportunities for young athletes from Ghana and Nigeria to develop, no athletes living outside the two nations will be allowed to compete.

Athletes for the games would be chosen from each the National Sports Festivals of each country.

Ghana/Ivory Coast Friendship Games were also held in the past.
