ASEAN Para Games
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia hosted a games which they called the ASEAN Para Games from October 26-29, 2001, a version of the SEA Games for disabled athletes. Vietnam organized the second edition of the ASEAN Para Games in conjunction with the 2003 SEA games. The third edition is scheduled for the Philippines in late 2005. |

December 6, 2005 The third Asean Para Games, the SEA games for disabled athletes open in Manila, Philippines December 14 with a ceremony in Rizal Memorial Stadium. About 1,000 athletes are expected to participate in the games which run until December 21. Sports in the games will be athletics, badminton, chess, goalball, judo, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair tennis. Demonstration sports include boccia, fencing, sailing, and tenpin bowling are demonstration sports. Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has signed Executive Order 275 calling for full support from the government and citizens for the games. 2005 ASEAN Para Games to grow to ten sports March 11, 2004 The ASEAN Para games will expand in 2005, adding five more sports to the five held in last years games. The new sports will be bowling, chess, goalball, judo and tennis in addition to athletics, badminton, swimming, table tennis and wrestling that were included in the 2003 games. The games are scheduled to be held in December 2005 in the Philippines. Thailand tops at ASEAN Para GamesJanuary 3, 2004 Vietnam won the total medals race while Thailand scored the most gold medals at the second ASEAN Para games held in Hanoi. East Timor scored their first ever international medal with a bronze by Mateus Lukas in the 48kg weightlifting division. The games included athletics, badminton, swimming, tennis and weightlifting for athletes who are paralyzed, wheelchair-bound, visually impaired, suffering cerebral palsy or are mentally-retarded. The games grew from 400 athletes in the first edition in 2001, to about 700 athletes on this occasion. The 2005 games are scheduled to be held in the Philippines, after the SEA Games. Hanoi to open second ASEAN Para Games Dec. 17, 2003 The second ASEAN Para Games, the South East Asian Games version of the Paralympics will open in Hanoi December 21 and run until December 27. Five sports, athletics, badminton, swimming, table tennis and weightlifting are included in the games. The games opening ceremony will be December 21 at My Dinh National Stadium and the closing ceremony on December 27 at Hang Day Stadium The first ASEAN Para Games were held in Kuala Lumpur in 2001. |
