Tom Gleisner, co-author of "The Jetlag Guide to Molvania" Wednesday, September 29th, 2004, Noon - 3pm
on
Irwin's show
This Wednesday at 1:00 pm, Irwin welcomes Tom Gleisner,
co-author
of the Jetlag Travel Guide to Molvania, published in the US
by Overlook Press. Molvania is a little cared-about eastern European
republic affectionately known as "a land untouched by modern dentistry."
Gleisner, who just returned from his 17th visit to Molvania, will discuss
that nation's infectious diseases, pickpocket culture, and linguistic use
of
the triple-negative. Formerly a Soviet bloc country, Molvania was liberated
in 1982 when the famous Lutenblag Wall collapsed -- not from democratic
reform, but from shoddy construction.
Sharron Kraus Monday, September 27th, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
Dark folk for the new Milennium is what Sharron Kraus does best. Her latest, "Songs of Love and Loss" falls perfectly into the dark hole of sweet melancholia. Sharron's been hanging out with bands Black Forest/Black Sea and Espers, and is about to embark on a European tour with Fursaxa. She's been snagged with guitar and banjo in hand, recorded live in all her dark glory for WFMU. 4 PM.
Dälek Saturday, September 25th, 2004, 8pm - 11pm
on
Mike Lupica's show
A sonic fury that demands reckoning with, Newark New Jersey's Dälek pay their second visit to WFMU, bringing with them an arsenal of material that'll challenge even the most extreme interpretations of experimental hip-hop. Dark lyrics, beats of planet-shattering proportions, and a live show that knows no equal -- These gentlemen have consistently obliterated with every step up to the plate. They'll be unveiling a slew of new material tonight, to be heard on their upcoming 2nd album for Ipecac Records, as well as discussing everything from their inception in the mid-90s to their recent collaborative effort with Krautrock legends Faust. Sure to be one for the ages!
The Ratchets Thursday, September 23rd, 2004, 11pm - 2am
on
Pat Duncan's show
The Ratchets deliver the promise of rock-n-roll music that was somehow lost in the shuffle. Taking their name from a lyric in The Slicker's song "Johnny Too Bad", this four-piece fuses rock-n-roll, punk and reggae music with their very own explosive brand of songwriting. The band hails from Asbury Park and features ex-members of Worthless United and Plan A Project.
To Live and Shave in L.A. Tuesday, September 21st, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
Sonic manipulator Tom Smith plugs into the inner bulb of his psyche and spews more personality into noise rock than most (and "rock" is a definite factor in this equation.) The years-in-the-making 2LP opus "The 18th Century Wigmaker in Williamsburg" is a total masterpiece of cut-up madness, demented drum-and-bass, dub destruction, vocal exorcisms, and more sludge pouring into your ears than you can comprehend. What may be deemed impenetrable at first will surely and inevitably get Tom recognized as this millenium's true Disco Diva. This past March saw a reunited TLASILA going ballistic at the Brooklyn No Fun freakfest; today the gang plays on Brian's show and includes Mark Morgan from Sightings, Don Fleming, Rat Bastard, Andrew WK, and Ben Wolcott.
Vitamin-D Monday, September 20th, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
Bostonian by birth, Virginian by upbringing, Brooklynite by
choice, Dennis Cronin has taken a long sidecar through the Nashville recording scene to make his musical home in NYC with a new pop project, Vitamin-D, and a gem-laden album called, "Build Another." Dennis and his trumpet's musical travels have included stints with Lambchop, Vic Chesnutt, Calexico, Willard Grant Conspiracy, Josh Rouse, and Ladybug Transistor. He's equally comfortable on his guitar as he is in Classical music's orbit. While looking for new creative challenges, Cronin and his brother launched Boston's Mount Hood Classical Music Series. These days Dennis' heart is in Vitamin-D, which he brings to WFMU for a live set at 4 PM.
LSD March Monday, September 20th, 2004, Midnight - 3am
on
Janitor From Mars with R. Lim
Rising stars of the Japanese underground, LSD March are true inheritors to both the dark lysergic legacy of Rallizes Denudes and the primitive drone rock of early Spacemen 3. Long unknown outside of Japan, they recently embarked on their first US tour and blew minds with their explosive psychedelic fury. The Janitor From Mars is pleased to present this exclusive radio session, recorded in the WFMU studios in August.
Lost Sounds Saturday, September 18th, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
"Southern September" goes out like a lion with the roar of Memphis' Lost Sounds! Alicja Trout (ex-Clears) and Jay Lindsey (ex-Reatards) return, tearing thru a set of incredible, intense, dark, crazy keyboard-driven punk garage. Actually they say they play Black Wave which is a cross between black metal and new-wave!! These guys may be dark but they are also funny as hell. Get their new limited, vinyl only EP Future Touch, out now, and watch for their new self-titled full-length on In The Red next month!
Afri Rampo Tuesday, September 14th, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
Hailing from Osaka, Afri Rampo are Oni (guitar/vocal) and Pika
(drum/vocal), two g-string and pastie-clad women who describe
themselves as "pussycats kicking naked soul rock". Last summer in
Los Angeles they were seemingly set to charm an audience's pants off but
instead let loose a barrage comparable to the Boredoms or Mars, bludgeoning
'em all like seals. Their first trip to the East Coast finds them
recording an LP for the Tzadik label, playing a gig with Lightning Bolt,
and hopefully
getting past Dubyapalooza to make it out to the WFMU studios.
Ill Ease Monday, September 13th, 2004, 8pm - 11pm
on
Scott Williams's show
Brooklyn's dirty white indie funksters Ill Ease, led by New Radiant Storm King drummer Elizabeth Sharp, exorcise all our Republican bad vibes with their fantastic new album "The Exorcist", and a sure to be groovy live set tonight on Scott's show.
Jutok Kaneko and Koji Shimura Monday, September 13th, 2004, Midnight - 3am
on
Janitor From Mars with R. Lim
Jutok Kaneko has been perfecting his freewheeling psychedelic guitar style since 1978, when he founded the legendary Sabbathesque power trio Kousokuya. More recently, Kaneko has been collaborating with such like-minded musicians as Miminokoto's drummer, Koji Shimura. While on tour together in early August, they stopped by the station to record a bracing free-rock duet of ecstatic feedback squall and whirlwind drum improvisations.
Charlie Gillett is author of the landmark study of early rock and roll,
"The Sound of the City." And he's a longtime radio DJ in the UK (his show
helped launch the career of Dire Straits among others.) He is now one of
the most influential figures on the 'world music' scene in the UK,
spinning world and roots music on his weekly BBC Radio London program, and
producing an annual 2-CD global music survey. This year's CD collection is entitled "World 2004" (Wrasse Records.)
Reigning Sound Saturday, September 11th, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
"Southern September" continues with the Reigning Sound, whose members hail from Memphis TN and Asheville NC. Featuring Greg "Oblivian" Cartwright, The Reigning Sound bring their searing,
soulful garage punk back to WFMU, and they rip through songs from this year's highly critically acclaimed (and destined for numerous Top 10 lists) Too Much Guitar album as well as older favorites. Find out why they're the South's... no, AMERICA's, best rock band! Watch out for their new album of rarities and outtakes, Home For Orphans, coming out this month.
The Small Potatoes Thursday, September 9th, 2004, 8pm - 11pm
on
Music to Spazz By with Dave the Spazz
The Small Potatoes are a female-fronted band who play mostly covers of 50's and 60's country and a little bit of rockabilly. Take favorites and obscurities from Rose Maddox, Jean Shepard, Charlene Arthur, Buddy Holly, Ernie Chaffin, and many more, add one or two originals, throw in a dash of old-fashioned Yankee incompetence, stir in some glorious chicken-pickin' lead guitar and there you have the Small Potatoes. They opened for Wanda
Jackson once, but they mostly play at crummy dives for 9 or 10 of their friends. A must for those who dislike between-song patter, which is precluded by the Small Potatoes' crippling stage fright. The Small Potatoes will be joined on one or two songs by Sarah Hawker of the Lonesome Sisters.
3puen Monday, September 6th, 2004, 11pm - 2am
on
Choking on Cufflinks with Michael Goodstein
3puen (pronounced "Pyoon", the "3" is silent) have been toiling away in the East Village with their unique, strange and wonderful electro-pop for a few years now, striking it big on WFMU last year with their left-field pop hit "Sugar Cookie." Imagine Fad Gadget or DAF fronted by divas with a penchant for trashy 70s movie dialogue and bizarre theatrics. The group, consisting of Flloyd, Patti Lu3puen, Brian Damage, Ingrid ForNow, and Otis Von Darling will pay a visit to Choking With Cufflinks to perform songs from their new EP, which they're only selling in a deli.
The Carbonas Saturday, September 4th, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
Terre T kicks off "Southern September" with the Carbonas! This four-piece comes out of Atlanta's Die Slaughterhaus scene (which also includes such bands as the Black Lips and the Lids.) These guys
play blistering old school punk that will also call to mind the Pagans or
Teengenerate. Tune in and hear them for yourself!
Treach from Naughty by Nature Wednesday, September 1st, 2004, 2am - 6am
on
Coffee Break For Heroes & Villains with Noah
Naughty By Nature stormed out of East Orange, NJ in the early 1990's with records that jumped straight to the top!
"O.P.P," "Hip-Hop Hooray," "Ghetto Bastard," "Uptown Anthem," and "Feel Me Flow," were more than just infectious, world wide party anthems, these records helped mark and shape the beginning of a unified Hip-Hop Nation. From the East Coast to the West, America to Africa, all throughout Europe and Asia, Naughty By Nature continued snatching up new fans by the dozens.
Tonight Noah will chat with New Jersey native Treach about hip-hop and community as well as playing classic Naughty cuts and some unheard gems!
Electrelane Tuesday, August 31st, 2004, 11pm - 2am
on

The Brighton quartet turned heads with their second
album release and tour earlier this year, and make a
very anticipated return to Plug & Play to kick off
their next US tour. Be sure to catch their shows at

Gravenhurst Monday, August 30th, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
"Flashlight Seasons," the second offering
from Gravenhurst mainman Nick Talbot, has just been reissued by Warp
Records, and he was happy to drop by the studio to tape something while on
a solo tour. Nick's songs are achingly beautiful chronicles from the darker
side of life, described in his press as, "...voice and lyricism that is at
times breathtaking, at others shocking, but never less than entirely
involving - pretty as it sounds, you wouldn't dare turn your back on it for
a second." This event re-scheduled from August 2nd.
Sounds of the Counter-Convention Sunday, August 29th, 2004, 10pm - Midnight
on
Stochastic Hit Parade with Bethany Ryker
Bethany plays audio recordings from her weekend counter-convention activities. Highlights will include Pauline Oliveros' Ringout at the World Trade Center site on Saturday -- in which 3000+ bells will be played in remembrance of 9/11 to "Ring out" the Republicans. Bethany will also hunt and gather sounds in the midst of the thousands who gather together Sunday afternoon. This program will also be heard on WFMU's RNC web stream.
Jessie Allen of the Brennan Center for Justice Friday, August 27th, 2004, 9am - Noon
on
Give the Drummer Some with Doug Schulkind
Florida is one of just a handful of states that permanently
disenfranchises anyone convicted of felony. Some say this law -- enacted during reconstuction when freed slaves first got the right to vote -- disproportionally affects the African American community, and could help determine the outcome of the coming presidential election. For an in-depth discussion of Florida's problematic law and its looming implications, tune in to "Give the Drummer Some," this Friday for an interview with voting rights expert Jessie Allen. She is associate counsel for the Brennan Center for Justice, and is the lead attorney in Johnson v. Bush, a
major Federal voting and civil rights suit challenging Florida's permanent voting ban for felons. The discussion will begin at 11:30am.
La Laque Tuesday, August 24th, 2004, 11pm - 2am
on
Plug and Play with OCDJ
La Laque is a loud, reverby, minor-key surf band with
whispery girl vocals and French lyrics. Formed in
Brooklyn just one year ago, they have quickly made
quite an impression around town. Tune in tonight for
your last chance to hear La Laque perform live with
drummer Pete Shanel.
Jason Crigler Band -- CANCELED Monday, August 23rd, 2004, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
Due to an unfortunate medical emergency, The Jason Crigler Band will not be performing this week. Jason collapsed onstage about two weeks ago, but fortunately he seems to be on the mend. When he's back on his feet we'll reschedule the show. We wish Jason a speedy recovery and send the best to his family.
The Crazy Rhythms Crew Tuesday, August 17th, 2004, 11pm - 2am
on
Plug and Play with OCDJ
Named after both the Montclair record store and the Feelies record, New Jersey's Crazy Rhythms combo of Mike Simonetti (Troubleman Unlimited Records) and Dan Selzer (Acute Records/nyhappenings) is one of the areas hottest DJ troupes. Don't let their rock reputations fool you, as a former Prince back up dancer and ex-Kool and the Gang cover band bassist, these guys know where the beat is at. So push the furniture out of the way, crank your system, and get ready to shake it to Crazy Rhythms.
Aki Onda Sunday, August 15th, 2004, 10pm - Midnight
on
Stochastic Hit Parade with Bethany Ryker
Before the CD, cassettes reigned supreme. You remember the way they grew to fame, as people popped them into car stereos and ambled about listening to Walkmans. The mix tape was born. But don¹t think the cassette is a mere casualty of the 80s. Aki Onda doesn¹t. He¹s never without a hand-held recorder, picking up odd noise, fragments of conversation and distant murmurs. Then he lets loose. Dust off your tape deck for this one.
All times listed are Jersey City time, EST.
