This four piece from Sayreville, NJ, has created a sound that is unique, combining a powerful rock melody with crisp, clean acoustic chords. This novel sound is fronted by pop influenced male vocals and backed by melodic female harmonies. The resulting sound is kind and sweet, yet at the same time, such a punch in the gut.

Wake up! Sparks on the airwaves with Gen Ken Montgomery
Thursday, February 20th, 2003, Noon - 3pm

"The Rules" -- week three
Wednesday, February 19th, 2003, 7pm - 8pm
on Read 'Em and Weep with Bronwyn C.

Due to the astonishing volume of contentious Listener e-mail, Bronwyn C. has decreed an Unprecedented Third Week of discussion about a book. Unfortunately, that book is "The Rules." Read it, call in, talk about it - this Wednesday.

David now welcomes them to WFMU, where they will adapt their tuneful visual spectacle for the radio airwaves.

John Strausbaugh
Wednesday, February 12th, 2003, 8pm - 11pm
on
Intelligent Design with Kenny G
Strausbaugh is the author of "Rock Till You Drop", the infamous book that makes the claim that rock 'n roll is a young man's game and pointedly accuses dinosaurs like Mick Jagger for still trudging on into the new millennium. Controversial and fiery, hear why "Colostomy Rock" is a doomed game and why rockers like Pete Townsend should've actually died before they got old.

Can you imagine Captain Beefheart growing up as the creature under the stairs of the Brill Building back in the day? Well, that might begin to hint at the wonder of this show. Twisted pop with a healthy dollop of gospel and then some, and then a lot more. Don't miss it!

His soon-to-be-released album, "Memory Girls," features invited guests like Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Billy Conway, Jerry Dale McFadden of Sixpence None the Richer, the fascinating Kenny Vaughn and a host of other folks who understood what Warren was talking about music-wise. Red Card
Monday, February 10th, 2003, Midnight - 3am
on Dan Mackta's show

Red Card is a post punk, three-piece band based in Brooklyn, New York. In the summer of 2001 they recorded their first self-titled CD, released on Useless Chords Records. Embedded with indie passion, political conviction and urban frustration, Red Card's sound recalls the intensity of the Stooges, the philosophy of Gang of Four, and the sensibility of Sonic Youth.

Grounded by punk rock hearts that grew up on bands like H2O, Green Day, and Social Distortion, Hurry-Up Offense has gradually distilled a variety of punk, country, and rock influences into a distinctly explosive sound. Their new album, "Donald Moore," cannot be broken down into one theme, but rather one feeling of pure energy and aggression.

Making his performing debut on WFMU, Butler and company will present tunes from his albums "I Feel A Bit Normal" and "Easy Life." They'll also perform big chunks from "The Museum of Me," a recent collection of original songs captured on such bygone sound relics as wire recorders, wax cylinders, and antique tape machines.

Repellent
Thursday, January 16th, 2003, 11pm - 2am
on
Pat Duncan's show
From Brooklyn, by way of Massachusetts, comes Repellent. A mathy, guitar-based indie rock band that marries brash vocals, shoe-gazey space-rock guitar lines, and heavy, bombastic rhythms. Described by a listener as "a little like Elvis Costello and the Attractions. If the Attractions were people from Polvo, the Jesus Lizard, and the Allman Brothers or something... I don't know. It's pretty screwy, but I like it."

This week on Nickel and Dime radio we're happy to have both People Like Us and Irene Moon invade the airwaves. The UK's People Like Us (aka Vicki Bennett) has been a long time favorite of FMU's with her audio cut-ups of oldball music, spoken word, and sound effects that's equal parts crack and laughing gas. Based out of Atlanta, Irene Moon's 'learning experiences' combine sound collage and surreal (but quite real) science. Who says you can't trip and learn? Who knows what these audio terrorists will do together?

Determined to create their own atmosphere rather then dealing with stagnant rock tenets, At A Loss offers music defined by swelling dynamics, haunting melodies, a wall of guitars, and the occasional mixing and matching of time signatures. Live, band members tend to use performances as a way of dealing with going to work, going to class, and doing other things that no 20 year old actually wants to do. Having extensively toured the eastern sections of the United States behind the release of two well circulated demos, the band is ready to unleash their debut full length record "A Falling Away From" in Spring 2003 on seminal NYC label Blackout! Records.

Bronwyn C. does a lot of red-faced, Fox-News-style anti-New-York-Times ranting. Plus, Listeners are invited to call in to discuss what's the deal with the New York Sun? When was the last time you read the New Amsterdam News? And is the Des Moines Register really the best newspaper in the US? Call and give *your* opinion.

Tune in to hear one of the most unique artists today exploring American roots and blues music. The Ghost of Mankind
Thursday, January 2nd, 2003, 11pm - 2am
on
Pat Duncan's show
The Ghost of Mankind is a post-punk act who formed five years ago in Brooklyn. More of a holdover act than a retro act (you can't return if you never left) think more the Motors with a pinch of Discharge, than the Strokes or the Yeahs or whatever the kids listen to. Definite comparisons to Wire and an occasional "Was that Gary Numan's 'Are Friends Electric' done in the style of the Ramones?" have garnered them such fans as Steve Ignorant and Dr. Israel. They have recorded two albums of original material and continue to play live against their better judgement.

on
Intelligent Design with Kenny G
Join Kenny G on New Year's Day night for a full-length airing of Glenn Gould's rarely heard epic radio work "The Solitude Triolgy". Recorded in the late 60s and early 70s for the CBC, these pieces combine drama, documentary, and music into a new form of radio art that Gould called "contrapuntal documentaries." Downtown Soulville with Mr. Fine Wine
A tribute to the brilliant singer and comedian Billy Guy--who passed away in November--featuring lesser-known Coasters records that he sang lead on; rare solo 45s, like some of his funky stuff for New Jersey's All Platinum label; nightclub comedy, including the funniest joke Mr. Fine Wine has ever heard; and maybe even excerpts from his notorious two-lp sitting-around-and-talking-with-four-drag-queens extravaganza "Call Me Miss-ter." A full hour of Billy Guy!
