The Tenacious Delight Schools Us on How to Rock, Grow Up and Fart on Cue

by H.W. Fowler  |  October 1, 2003

Jack Black's an established wild man of comedy in nearly every medium: In movies like Shallow Hal and High Fidelity, on television (cable, of course), on CD and even live--as half of Tenacious D, the R-rated folk-metal band he fronts with fellow cutup Kyle Gass.

But in his latest movie, The School of Rock, we find Black's sensitive side. He plays Dewey Finn, a failed guitarist who lies his way into a teaching job at a ritzy private school, where he turns a class of fifth graders into a smokin' rock band. There are no dirty words, only borderline illegal behavior--and rock!

Don't worry, though: Black's still nuts as ever. Now, find out why...

Who was more mature on the set, you or the kids?

Well, obviously, the kids. I'm pretty immature. But that's my bread and butter. I'm definitely mellower when I'm off-duty, but I'm not any more mature--just a little more relaxed.
