Peter is the more famous of the two. From Australia, they were discovered in Hong Kong by Judy Garland.
She brought them to England where Peter met Liza Minelli and the two were married and later divorced. Peter went on to have an illustrious career as a cabaret performer and as a songwriter, penning many top hits. He died of complications from AIDS in 1992. His brother is said to have returned to Australia to become a pilot. Liner notes on this LP are by Johnny Carson. Actually quite a good selection of quirky pop psuedo-psychedelia in keeping with that era.

Pre "Smokin' in the Boysroom" Brownsville Station, a stalwart opening act on the 70's rock circuit. Leader Cub Koda was quite a character. Good player too. Wrote articles for Goldmine and DISCoveries in later years. Died of kidney disease in 2000. This album features original lead singer Michael Lutz and bassist Tony Driggins.

I errantly call this song "Lovely Lady" on the show. It's actually the next track on the LP, "Buy Back My Life." Froggie Beaver was from Omaha and was basically four guys who ditched their cover bands to give it a go as an original act. They did very well regionally. The album "From The Pond" is quite collectable now among art rock enthusiasts. Especially in Germany. This song is a bit poppier than their standard fare.

Grand Funk often gets a bad rap. And all you hear on the radio is "Locomotion" and "American Band." But, in their initial incarnation they wer actually quite an incendiary and politically outspoken group. Great raw Michigan unadorned rock produced by quirky uber-svengali Terry Knight. The energy on this track is palpable. Saw GFR a few years back. They were great. In good shape and happy.
I guess Mark Farner is on the outs with Don and Mel right now. Hope they patch things up.

Written by Nina Simone and Irvine Weldon, Jr. Hathaway played keys too. From Chicago. Hathaway was a producer for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label in the late 60's. Musician King Curtis led him to Atco records where he did two LP's. He is perhaps best known for his duets with Roberta Flack. On January 13th, 1979, Hathaway is thought to have jumped from the 15th floor of the Essex Hotel in NYC. He left behind a 10 year old daughter, Lalah.

Mega producer and ELO leader Jeff Lynne is featured hear with the enigmatic Roy Wood. After this song, the band would become ELO. Wood stayed for one LP and then formed Wizzard. I wish I had a copy of "Shazam" by The Move in 1970. Maybe their best. Split ends was a greatest hits LP.

The NY R&R; Ensemble was ahead of its' time, predating ELO and others by mixing classical influences with rock. Sadly, Kamen died of a heart attack in 2003.

Can't remember where I came across this but I'm glad I did. Charming art rock. I may have been initially lured in through the delightfully garish cover painted and penciled by Brad Johanssen. Without looking it up, I'm going to guess he is the guy who did the delightfully garish cover of a "Lighthouse" LP I have on Evolution records. Anyway .... this is 70's glam queen Suzi Quatro's brother Mike doing his thing with lots of free flowing ideas and layers of cool mellotron.

Real name: Genaro Louis Vitaliano, Jerry Vale started out singing in NYC supper clubs. he was discovered by Guy Mitchell and personally signed, recorded and produced by the legendary Mitch Miller at Columbia. Vale survived and prospered in the 50s and 60s rock era when many of his pop peers fell off the hitmaking map. What a voice. Enjoy!

Consider this. Timi Yuro (Rosemarie Timotea Aurro) was 18 when she recorded this song in 1961! Incredible. Even though this was her only chart topper, she had many top 100 hits. She resurfaced in the early 80's and was very popular in Europe. She even recorded an LP with Willie Nelson in '84. Yuro died of cancer in Vegas in 2004.

I could have picked a better song to showcase the late Candy Givens voice. I wish I had the "Going Back to Colorado" LP. Colorado band Zephyr is best known for their former guitarist, Tommy Bolin. Sunset Ride was recorded after his departure. If you ever have the opportunity, check out the song "At This Very Moment" by Candy on the Goin' Back to Colorado" LP. It is one of my favorites. Trippy, spooky, sad and beautiful just like it's dear departed composer.
