December 5, 2005: The Dusty Show A-Z - Episode X

You can Listen to this show (RealAudio)

Artist Track Album Label Format Comments Year
Chris and Peter Allen  My Silent Symphony   Album #1  Mercury  LP  Peter is the more famous of the two. From Australia, they were discovered in Hong Kong by Judy Garland. She brought them to England where Peter met Liza Minelli and the two were married and later divorced. Peter went on to have an illustrious career as a cabaret performer and as a songwriter, penning many top hits. He died of complications from AIDS in 1992. His brother is said to have returned to Australia to become a pilot. Liner notes on this LP are by Johnny Carson. Actually quite a good selection of quirky pop psuedo-psychedelia in keeping with that era.  1968
Brownsville Station  Wanted (Dead or Alive)   A Night on the Town  Big Tree  LP  Pre "Smokin' in the Boysroom" Brownsville Station, a stalwart opening act on the 70's rock circuit. Leader Cub Koda was quite a character. Good player too. Wrote articles for Goldmine and DISCoveries in later years. Died of kidney disease in 2000. This album features original lead singer Michael Lutz and bassist Tony Driggins.  1972
Crabby Appleton  Go Back   Crabby Appleton  Elektra  LP  Top 40 hit from their debut LP. This California band led by Michael Fennelly frequently opened for The Doors. Had a follow up LP "Rotten to the Core" and broke up.  1970
Demian  Face the Crowd   Demian  ABC  LP  Formed from the ashes of The Bubble Puppy, best known for the underground classic "Hot Smoke 'N Sassafras." Songwriters Rod Prince and Todd Cox headed west to California to flee their former label, International Artists. Good hard rock LP overseen by Nick St. Nicholas of Steppenwolf.  1971
The Eleventh Hour  Lady Marmalade   Greatest Hits  20th Century  LP  This album features famed songwriter/producer Bob Crewe. Lady Marmalade was later a massive hit for La Belle. Crewe wrote many hits for the 4 Seasons and countless others.  1974
Froggie Beaver  Buy Back My Life   From The Pond  Froggie Beaver  LP  I errantly call this song "Lovely Lady" on the show. It's actually the next track on the LP, "Buy Back My Life." Froggie Beaver was from Omaha and was basically four guys who ditched their cover bands to give it a go as an original act. They did very well regionally. The album "From The Pond" is quite collectable now among art rock enthusiasts. Especially in Germany. This song is a bit poppier than their standard fare.  1973
Grand Funk  Are You Ready   Live  Capitol  2 LP  Grand Funk often gets a bad rap. And all you hear on the radio is "Locomotion" and "American Band." But, in their initial incarnation they wer actually quite an incendiary and politically outspoken group. Great raw Michigan unadorned rock produced by quirky uber-svengali Terry Knight. The energy on this track is palpable. Saw GFR a few years back. They were great. In good shape and happy. I guess Mark Farner is on the outs with Don and Mel right now. Hope they patch things up.  1970
Donny Hathaway  To Be Young, Gifted and Black   Everything is Everything  Atco  LP  Written by Nina Simone and Irvine Weldon, Jr. Hathaway played keys too. From Chicago. Hathaway was a producer for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label in the late 60's. Musician King Curtis led him to Atco records where he did two LP's. He is perhaps best known for his duets with Roberta Flack. On January 13th, 1979, Hathaway is thought to have jumped from the 15th floor of the Essex Hotel in NYC. He left behind a 10 year old daughter, Lalah.  1970
Pedro Infante  Derecho A La Vida   Derecho A La Vida  Peerless  LP  A momumental movie and singing star in Mexico, still very popular nearly 50 years since his death. This song was recorded in 1955. Infante was killed in a plane crash (the THIRD plane crash he was involved in!) in 1957.  1955
J.D. Blackfoot  Pink Sun (edit of several tracks)   The Ultimate Prophecy  Mercury  LP  Some say one of the best psychedelic Lp's ever and I'd be hard pressed to argue. JD is still out there playing too. http://jdblackfoot.com/ This is an edit of a few of the highlights on the LP. Hard to find! Not the best sounding record. Recorded very quickly evidently. But, unquestionably a classic!  1970
King Crimson  Red   Red  Atlantic  LP  Cool Robert Fripp composition. The band was hitting on all cylinders here. Fripp is joined Bill Bruford and John Wetton. Ahh ... the good old days ... when prog was prog!  1974
Claudine Longet  The Look of Love   The Look of Love  A&M  LP  Vintage Bacharach tune beautifully rendered by Claudine and producer Tommy Li Puma. There is always something great on Claudine Longet LPs. Check out another great song she did called "Wanderlove" complete with droning sitar.  1967
The Move  Message from the Country   Split Ends  United Artists  LP  Mega producer and ELO leader Jeff Lynne is featured hear with the enigmatic Roy Wood. After this song, the band would become ELO. Wood stayed for one LP and then formed Wizzard. I wish I had a copy of "Shazam" by The Move in 1970. Maybe their best. Split ends was a greatest hits LP.  1972
New York Rock & Roll Ensemble  Asking Too Much   Faithful Friends - Flattering Foe  Atco  LP  Features the late Michael Kamen. A prolific composer and film score writer, arranger, conductor and musician. Kamen worked with many heavyweight artists in his lifetime. The NY R&R; Ensemble was ahead of its' time, predating ELO and others by mixing classical influences with rock. Sadly, Kamen died of a heart attack in 2003.  1969
Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band  Why   Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band  Apple  LP  A highly adventurous LP featuring Yoko, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voorman, Ornette Coleman and others. Often dismissed as noise, in hindsight this is some powerful music. Beautifully unleashed caterwauling by this legendary Sarah Lawrence alumnus. Ahead of her time here and unfairly maligned in my estimation.  1970
Jaco Pastorius  Donna Lee   Jaco  Epic  LP  Much has been written about Jaco. He was a beautiful musician and a troubled soul plagued with mental problems. If it sounds like you've heard his style before, you have ... he invented it and has been copied by everyone who has picked up a bass since.  1976
Mike Quatro Jam Band  Paintings   Paintings  Evolution  LP  Can't remember where I came across this but I'm glad I did. Charming art rock. I may have been initially lured in through the delightfully garish cover painted and penciled by Brad Johanssen. Without looking it up, I'm going to guess he is the guy who did the delightfully garish cover of a "Lighthouse" LP I have on Evolution records. Anyway .... this is 70's glam queen Suzi Quatro's brother Mike doing his thing with lots of free flowing ideas and layers of cool mellotron.  1972
Charlie Rich  You Never Really Wanted Me   Behind Closed Doors  Epic  LP  Glad I got to play some Silver Fox for you. Rich is one of the powerfully understated talents that is often overlooked. He died too young as the greats often do. He came up on Sun Records. This is from an Epic LP produced by Billy Sherrill.  1973
Slave  Slide   Slave  Cotillion  LP  A potent Ohio-based funk aggregate featuring the blistering guitar of Drac! Formed in Dayton in 1975. Some members later departed to form Aurra. Wish I had a copy of "Snap Shot" from '81.  1977
Tyrannosaurus Rex  Wind Quartets   Prophets, Seers and Sages, The Angels of the Ages  A&M  LP  Originally Released in '68, this is taken from an A&M; re-packaging called "Small Beginnings." Psychedelic folk featuring the late great Mark Bolan of T. Rex fame with his then partner, Steve Peregrin-Took. Soon Bolan would go electric and leave his minstrel days and Peregrin-Took behind.  1968
Uriah Heep  The Magician's Birthday   The Magician's Birthday  Mercury  LP  Man. I'm really raiding the old high school album collection tonight. Breaking out the Heep! I'm surprised some seeds didn't fall out of the gatefold. I should have played the whole glorious 10 minute epic instead of doing the hack job edit I did. Apologies.  1973
Jerry Vale  Go Chase A Moonbeam   Jerry Vale's Greatest Hits  Columbia  LP  Real name: Genaro Louis Vitaliano, Jerry Vale started out singing in NYC supper clubs. he was discovered by Guy Mitchell and personally signed, recorded and produced by the legendary Mitch Miller at Columbia. Vale survived and prospered in the 50s and 60s rock era when many of his pop peers fell off the hitmaking map. What a voice. Enjoy!
White Witch  Class of 2000   White Witch  Capricorn  LP  This Tampa-based band was hard to figure out. Capricorn was more of a southern rock label at the time, but these guys wore make-up, had cryptic pagan sayings and symbols on their LP covers, had a cauldron with dry ice on the stage. Worth looking in to.  1974
Timi Yuro  Hurt   The Best of Timii Yuro  Liberty  LP  Consider this. Timi Yuro (Rosemarie Timotea Aurro) was 18 when she recorded this song in 1961! Incredible. Even though this was her only chart topper, she had many top 100 hits. She resurfaced in the early 80's and was very popular in Europe. She even recorded an LP with Willie Nelson in '84. Yuro died of cancer in Vegas in 2004.  1963
Zephyr  Sunset Ride   Sunset Ride  Warner Bros.  LP  I could have picked a better song to showcase the late Candy Givens voice. I wish I had the "Going Back to Colorado" LP. Colorado band Zephyr is best known for their former guitarist, Tommy Bolin. Sunset Ride was recorded after his departure. If you ever have the opportunity, check out the song "At This Very Moment" by Candy on the Goin' Back to Colorado" LP. It is one of my favorites. Trippy, spooky, sad and beautiful just like it's dear departed composer.  1972
Thanks for listening! I admit that I ran out of time this week and resorted to this A-Z thing in a pinch, but it was fun to play music anyway. Wish I could do it more. Incidentally ... most of these tracks were edited in order for me to fit 25 songs into one hour. Apologies to the artists. Don't forget to e-mail me. dusty@wfmu.org and you can also call the Dusty Show Answering Machine at 201.521.1375 and leave a message I can play on the show. I hope to hear from you. OK. I'm going now. Take care and .... always remember!
