Upcoming Special Programs on WFMU
Last updated: December 12th at 9:11 AM
Laura Veirs + Hotbird 7 Monday, December 12th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
"Carbon Glacier", named after a beautiful, dirty black and white glacier on
the northern slopes of Mount Rainier, was Seattle's Laura Veirs'
debut disc, and self-described as a "road record." Laura says, "All
the songs are about transportation, motion," and all the images that
crept into her psyche as she toured all over these United States and
beyond. She's taking a few moments out from her travels to stop by
WFMU at the top of the show to perform songs from it as well as her new one, "Year of Meteors."
Raised from the ashes of unknown NYC trio John Henry and claiming a failed
barbeque chicken restaurant and a doomed satellite as twin muses,
Hotbird 7 has been establishing its orbit since December 2002. The
Brooklyn based band was originally launched as a duo with Adam Gold
and Philip Winn juggling a station wagon full of instruments. The
group has now expanded to four members with Tom Gavin sharing
vocals, guitars, keyboards, and bass, and Jeff Devine staying put on
drums and laptop. They aim to make a big beautiful noise: fast and
slow, high and low, quiet, loud, twangy, spacey, and proud. Hotbird
7's self-released EP is available only at shows and a full length is
scheduled for Spring 2006, and they drop by WFMU's studios for a
live set.
Joe Belock's 2005 Guest List Tuesday, December 13th, Noon - 3pm
on
Three Chord Monte with Joe Belock
The calendar is down to its last page, and that means it's time to reflect
on another great year of amazing performances on the Three Chord Monte
program. Join us to hear highlights from the past year including live
music from the Posies, Steve Wynn, Outrageous Cherry, the Time Flys, the
Sights, Subway Surfers, DMBQ and many more - plus, by popular demand, an encore performance of the entire May 7 set by The Allen Oldies Band!
The Original Sins Tuesday, December 13th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner's show
While the Stooges, Ramones, Seeds, and 13th Floor Elevators
certainly paved the way for armies of Garage Rock disciple bands, few have come up with the goods like Bethlehem, Pennsylvania's
finest. Over 12 albums, frontman JT wrote classic songs through the band's mid 80's to mid 90's existence while simultaneously carving out his own supreme brand of psychedelic soul under the solo monicker Brother JT. Today on Brian's show it's an Original Sins reunion of sorts: organist Dan McKinney and drummer Seth Baer tear it up with JT once again, also joined by Photon Band bassist Art DiFuria.
Peter Zummo's Noisy Meditation Band Wednesday, December 14th, 8pm - 11pm
on
World of Echo with Dave Mandl
This group features Zummo on trombone, Ernie Brooks on
bass, Michael Evans on percussion, Tom Hamilton on synthesizer, and Yvette Perez on synthesizer and vocals. Zummo is a trombonist who was a frequent collaborator of Arthur
Russell's. Perez is the singer in Birdbrain (which also includes
Zummo), Ernie Brooks has played w/the Modern Lovers and Arthur Russell, and
Michael Evans has played with John Zorn, God Is My Co-Pilot, and many
others. The performance will begin at 9 PM.
Guest DJ's Andy Votel and Cherrystones Thursday, December 15th, 9am - Noon
on
This Is the Modern World with Trouble
This is the Modern World : On December 15th, DJ Trouble will be making
cucumber sandwiches for Manchester, England's Andy Votel, vinyl divining rod
of the incredible psych and ultra rare avant garde variety. His spinning
companion for this first visit to WFMU is London's Cherrystones, also
carrying more rare vinyl than can fit in the boot of a Mini. The UK
invasion begins at 10 am and ends at noon.
Guest DJ Mimi La Twisteuse Saturday, December 17th, 3pm - 6pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
Terre T is honored to have Mimi la Twisteuse guest DJing on the Cherry Blossom Clinic. Mimi's radio show entitled "Dans le Garage" aired in the early 90s on CISM, the Universite de Montreal radio station and was one of the few programs to feature '60s French pop on a weekly basis. She has compiled volume 10 of the infamous "Girls in the Garage" series on Romulan records, which is an all-French volume of '60s go-go girls. She also currently hosts a wildly successful dance party DJ night in Toronto.
Andy Statman began his career in the 70's as a virtuoso mandolinist who
studied and performed with David Grisman. He went on to study clarinet
with the klezmer legend Dave Tarras, becoming one of the original driving
forces in the Klezmer revival.
Chicha Libre plays Chicha music from Venezuela. Chicha is the name of a
corn-based liquor enjoyed by the Incas. Chicha is also the name of a
South American music craze which started out in the late 70's in the
Peruvian Amazon. These were songs loosely inspired by Colombian
accordion-driven cumbias but blended with the distinctive sounds of Andean
melodies, Cuban son, and the psychedelic sounds of surf guitars, farfisa
organs and moog synthesizers.
Mavrothis Kontanis performs a variety of traditional and classical music
from Greece and the Near East with oud, voice, and percussion. His focus
is on the folk and urban music of Asia Minor's Greek population, but also
touches upon the songs of the Greek mainland and islands which were
influenced by the music of Asia Minor refugees.
Come down and witness it all in person! Barbes is located at 376 9th St (at 6th Ave) in Brooklyn, NY.
Kate and Anna McGarrigle Monday, December 19th, 3pm - 6pm
on
Irene Trudel's show
Just what the world needs-- another "family" Christmas album, right? Well,
it's actually a beautiful thing in the hands of Kate and Anna
McGarrigle. The sisters from Canada have been making fine folk music
for many years, and just released The McGarrigle Christmas Hour to
get you in the mood for tree trimming. They're also bringing all
this to Carnegie Hall on 12/21. Grab a mug of eggnog as Kate and
Anna give us a little chat and a couple of songs.
Made Out of Babies Thursday, January 5th, 2006, 3pm - 6pm
on
Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine
Favorites on the Kamikaze Fun Machine, Made Out of Babies is Brooklyn's brilliant, brutal answer to the Dillinger Escape Plan, The Birthday Party, and Bjork, all rolled into one. Their debut CD on Neurot Records is called "Trophy" and this performance will be a warmup gig for the four-piece band's upcoming European tour!
The Catholic Girls Thursday, February 16th, 2006, 11pm - 2am
on
Pat Duncan's show
The Catholic Girls were born in the 1980s and
signed to MCA Records. After two national tours, widespread commercial airplay, and MTV exposure, they
disbanded in 1985. The band is now back and have
released their first full-length album since the MCA days entitled "Meet The
Catholic Girls" which contains a variety of garage, punk, & power-pop tunes.
All times listed are Jersey City time, EST.
