    WFMU Stream Update

    2 May, 2005
    Updates & Problems:

As of April 1st, we are no longer using Live365.com to provide our live MP3 streams. If you were accessing our streams from the Live365 site, or you bookmarked our streams from that location, you will need to click on the live MP3 streams at the top of this page to update your player.

The artist and song titles will now appear in your player's window if you are using winamp, realplayer or iTunes to listen to our mp3 stream, whenever a DJ is doing an accuplaylist.

WFMU is now podcasting fifteen shows, making the MP3 archives of these shows available automatically to your computer and/or MP3 player as soon as the archives are posted. For more info on WFMU Podcasts, click here.

All WFMU programs are now available after their broadcast as broadband, stereo MP3 archives, in addition to mono realaudio archives. MP3 archives are only available for two weeks, while the realaudio archives stay up longer. Keep up with recent program and fill-in archives on our Most Recent Archives Page.

If you are having problems with our streams or archives, please be sure to notify our Stream Team.

    Archives

All WFMU programs are available on demand, 24 hours a day, in the Realaudio and MP3 formats. (We do not archive any programs in the Windows Media Player format, although Windows Media Player can play our broadband MP3 archives.)

We are also making fifteen shows available as MP3 podcasts, meaning that you can sign up to have the MP3 archives of these shows delivered to your computer or MP3 player automatically.

Check out our archive page to get a full listing of all available archives, or check out our Most Recent Archives Page, our Special Archives page and our Random Archive Generator.

The Basics - To hear WFMU in Realaudio or Windows Media Player:

Our live Realaudio stream is here.

Our live Windows stream is here.

If you ever need to upgrade or reinstall Realplayer (and who doesn't), might we strongly suggest the free version of Realplayer 8, which can be downloaded for free here. (Please not that the Windows 95 version of Realplayer 8 works with all later versions of Windows.)

If you need to download the free Windows Media Player, click here.

The Basics - To hear WFMU in Streaming MP3:

    Our
basic MP3 stream is for people with 56k modems or better, and our broadband MP3 stream is for people with DSL, cable modems or T1 service.

In order to listen to our MP3 streams and archives, you will need a current version of Realplayer or winamp or iTunes 4 for Macs using OSX or ITunes Classic for Macs using OS 9.x.

To listen to either MP3 stream, first try the links. If that fails, try pasting the following addresses for either stream into the "open location" window of Realplayer or Winamp (these addresses are new as of February, 2005, and they're for our MP3 streams only):

    Broadband MP3 stream:
    http://mp3stream.wfmu.org

    Basic MP3 stream:
    http://mp3stream.wfmu.org:8004

If you still cannot connect after pasting these two addresses above in your player, then you may be behind a firewall that restricts your access.

Basic MP3 stream users who cannot access the stream caused by firewall restrictions will need to use a 20k Real or 20k Windows Media stream. Please follow the directions below titled Problems with Realaudio and Windows streams in order to allow the streams to pass through your firewall.

The Basics - To hear WFMU using iTunes:

To listen to WFMU via Apple's iTunes, you can use either of our MP3 streams. WFMU is located in the "Public" folder of the iTunes Radio Tuner. If iTunes is your default media player, click here for the
basic stream or here for the higher quality broadband stream. You can download the latest version of iTunes here.

The Basics - To hear WFMU using Ogg Vorbis:

To listen to WFMU's Ogg Vorbis stream, you must be using a modified version of Winamp 2.8, or Winamp 5 (for PC users), or Audion3 or Whamb (for Mac users), or the XMMS player (Unix users).

If you already have a player which can play Ogg Vorbis streams, try these start links:

Ogg Vorbis Start Link One (pls)

Ogg Vorbis Start Link Two (m3u)

If all else fails, input this text into your player's "open location" field:

    http://mp3stream.wfmu.org:8008/wfmu.ogg

Here is a list of links to download an Ogg Vorbis player:

    Linux/UNIX Users:
    XMMS: http://www.xmms.org/

    Windows Users:
Use Winamp 5 (the full free version, not the "lite" version)
    http://www.winamp.com/

Mac OS X Users (Jaguar or later, 10.1 is not supported):
    Whamb: http://www.whamb.com/

Mac OS 9, OS X users:
Audion 3: http://www.panic.com/audion/ (Free 15 day demo, $29.95 after that)

WFMU's Ogg Vorbis stream is intended to give superior audio quality to people with dial-up accounts, who can achieve actual bandwidth levels of 40k or higher. (People with broadband access will get better audio quality from our broadband MP3 stream.)

Ogg Vorbis is a new audio compression format. It is roughly comparable to other formats used to store and play digital music, such as MP3, VQF, AAC, and other digital audio formats. It is different from these other formats because it is completely free, open, and unpatented.

Ogg Vorbis files can compress to a smaller file size and still sound fine; Vorbis' better compression will cut down on bandwidth costs. More info about Ogg Vorbis can be found here.

For a list of players which support Ogg Vorbis, click here.

The Basics - To hear WFMU using AOL Radio:

To listen to WFMU via AOL Radio, you must have AOL version 7.0 or higher installed on your computer. WFMU is in "Indie" category.

If you're not an AOL member, you can still listen to our AOL stream by downloading the free Netscape Radio Plus Player here. Our stream is found in the "Alt/Hard Rock" category.

Problems with Realaudio and Windows streams

You can improve the performance of our Realaudio stream and archives by trying the following. NOTE: These instructions are for Realplayer 8.0 Basic, which can be
downloaded for free here. These instructions can help if you are experiencing dropout or duffering problems, or an "echoey" or distorted noise in our stream, or if you are listening at work (or behind a firewall):

    1) Open your copy of Realplayer

    2) Click on "view" and choose "preferences."

    3) Click on the Transport Tab

    4) Under Network Transport, select the "Use specified transports" option and click on "RTSP settings".

    5) Select the "Use HTTP Only" Option and click "OK".

    6) Click on the "Connection" Tab which will be located towards the top of the preferences window.

    7) Under "Buffered play", put in a value of 30 seconds for the buffer and click ok.

    8) Close real player and reconnect to the stream.

Tips for Improving Real Player 10 Connections

Real Player 10 doesn't always recognize DSL/Cable connections as being active. The connection to WFMU's live and archive Real streams will time out. In order to fix this issue, listeners need to:

    1) Open your copy of Realplayer

    2) Select Tools and then select Preferences

    3) Underneath Category, click on the "Connection" in the left pane.

    4) Select the "Assume I am online" choice underneath Online Status.

    5) Ok the selecion to make active.

    6) Close Real player and reconnect to the Real stream.

Tips for Improving Windows Media Player Performance

    1) In Windows Media Player select the Tools Menu and select "Options".

    2) Click on the "Network" tab. Uncheck the first three protocols so only "HTTP is checked".

    3) Click on the "Performance" tab located towards the top of the Options screen.

    4) Under Network Buffer, click on the "Buffer" radio button and change the value to 20 seconds. Click OK.

    5) Close Windows Media player and reconnect to the stream.
