The University's Ante-Bellum Foundation Prayers:

"They met as Christian men should meet, rendering homage to God.  The met to consult how they might glorify God in providing for the welfare of His children, how they might secure to all posterity the liberty rung out throughout all the land to the inhabitants thereof in the days of '76, and the better freedom which can be found in the reverent service of the Lord and of his Christ."  -1907 SEMI-CENTENNIAL CAP AND GOWN

On Lookout Mountain, July 4, 1857:

The Jubilate Deo (Hundredth Psalm)-  “…For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”

The twenty-second chapter of Joshua; read by Bishop Green of Mississippi-  “…But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all you heart and with all your soul….”

The Te Deum Laudamaus-  “We praise thee, O God, and acknowledge thee to be the LORD…, O LORD, save thy people, and bless thine heritage…, O LORD, let thy mercy be upon us, as our trust is in thee…”

The Gloria in Exclesis-  “…We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O LORD God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty…, For thou only art holy; thou only art the LORD; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father…”

At Sewanee, Tennessee, October 10, 1860:

The Jubilate Deo (Hundredth Psalm)-   "...Be ye sure that the Lord he is God..."

Scripture readings by Bishop Rutledge of Florida-  “…Except that the LORD build the house, the labor is but lost that build it…” (Nisi Dominus- Psalm 127)

Prayers by Bishop Cobbs of Alabama-  “…Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, by whose holy inspiration we think those things that are good and by whose merciful guiding we perform the same: look graciously upon thy humble servants here assembled in thy name and presence, and vouchsafe to us thy protection in the work in which we are about to engage…”

Declarations of Bishop Elliott of Georgia as he placed the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer in the Cornerstone-  “This sacred volume, being the Canonical Scripture of the Old and New Testament, is deposited, before and above all other memorials, in this cornerstone, to testify to the present generation and to all future ages, that [T]he University of the South recognizes the Word of God as the fountain of all true learning, and as the only source of that knowledge which maketh wise unto salvation. This copy of the Book of Common Prayer is deposited in this cornerstone, next after the Word of God, to testify that the University of the South believes it to be in perfect harmony with that Word and to exhibit, in its ministry, doctrine, and sacraments, the Church of God, as that Church was founded by Christ and His Apostles.”

Words of consecration by Bishop Leonidas Polk of Louisiana, upon striking the Cornerstone three times-  “In the Name of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Three Persons, One God, Blessed forever, Amen.…, for the cultivation of true religion, learning, and virtue, that thereby God my be glorified, and the happiness of men be advanced. Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ; the same yesterday, to-day and forever. God over all, blessed for evermore, in whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins; for there is none other name under Heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.”

The Benedicite, Omnia Opera Domini-  “O All ye Works of the LORD, bless ye the LORD: praise him and magnify him for ever…”  -The University of the South Papers, Series A, No. 1, REPRINTS OF THE DOCUMENTS AND PROCEEDINGS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, PRIOR TO 1860, edited by the Rev. Telfair Hodgson, D.D., Vice-Chancellor, and THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER
