(June
29, 2001) As part of its new Documentary Film project, Internews
Georgia premiered two films in Tblisi.
"Children
of the Street" is a 56-minute film documenting the lives
of Tbilisi's street children, with footage showing these children
living in the subway tunnels and parks of the city as well as
alternatives to street life that exist for some of these children.
The film was directed by Rusiko Tchkunia and was premiered at
the Free Theatre at Freedom Square.
"It
was a pleasure to see the film "Children of the Street."
What a superb production! I was impressed with the actual footage
as well as the message...juxtaposing the "problem"
with one "solution" leaves the audience not only educated,
but also inspired," said Cate Johnson, Director of the
Office of Democracy and Governance USAID/Caucasus, after viewing
the film.
"Until
Angels Return," a series of five 25-minute films focusing
on the ethnography of different regions of Georgia, premiered
at the House of Cinematographers. The films incorporate archival
film footage obtained from the Historical Museum of Georgia's
film and photo archive. This unique film archive is in danger
of being completely ruined within two years due to a lack of
funds to maintain it. The directors of the film series, Kakha
Melitauri and Jarji Akimidze, plan to publicize the archive
through their films and to identify outside funding to continue
their series.
