Glimpses of God
In recent years, we've noticed an increased interest in spiritual themes in today's popular music outside the Christian subculture. We refer to these faith-inspired examples as Glimpses of God. Some of them are by Christian artists working in the mainstream music industry. Others are nonbelievers who are clearly soul searching. Regardless, these challenging examples give the listener something to think aboutand an open door to discussing matters of faith with non-Christians.
New Glimpses:
Coldplay
X&Y
Coldplay continues their quest to become "the next U2" on their much-anticipated follow-up, which includes more of their Christian-influenced existential lyricism.
Weezer
Make Believe
It might be a stretch to say that Weezer and frontman Rivers Cuomo have "found religion," but based on the hopeful lyrics and the title of their latest CD, they seem to be seeking something more.
Bruce Springsteen
Devils & Dust
The Boss revisits his folksy roots for his thirteenth studio album, which is rife with spiritual imagery and themes of redemption.
Alter Bridge
One Day Remains
With a similar hard-rocking sound, a spiritual bent to the lyrics, and essentially the same bandmembers, the only thing that really separates Alter Bridge from Creed on One Day Remains is the absence of Scott Stapp.
Do you have a current "Glimpse of God," an example of perceived spirituality in popular music? Drop us an e-mail with your suggestion, and we'll consider it for future editions.
