1.  What software do you have for the student?
The CD-ROM that is included at no charge with the textbooks contains three products: Geology Explorer, interactive tutorials on key concepts; Physical Geology Interactive, five physical geology lab exercises complete with animations and interactive applets; and an online version of Peterson's Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals.

The textbooks also come with a password that gives students access to the protected areas of the HM geology web site, including web versions of the three products on the CD-ROM and ACE Practice Tests tied to the chapters of the Chernicoff textbooks. In addition, students have access to Geologylink.com, Houghton Mifflin's web site providing links to articles on the latest discoveries and news in the geologic community, class lectures, virtual field trips, government resources, references, organizations, and an online glossary.

2.  What software do you have for the instructor?
We have an Instructor CD-ROM, PowerPoint Slides, and a computerized test bank. The Instructor CD-ROM includes Power Presentation Manager software with line art from the text. PowerPoint Slides include line art and key figures and tables from the text that can be used in a presentation. The computerized test bank includes all the questions from the printed test bank.

3.  What materials do you have available on the web?
The textbooks come with a password that gives students access to the protected areas of the HM geology web site, including ACE Practice Tests tied to the chapters of the Chernicoff textbooks and the following web sites: Physical Geology Interactive and an online version of Peterson's Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals (both password protected). In addition, students have access to Geologylink.com, Houghton Mifflin's web site providing links to articles on the latest discoveries and news in the geologic community, class lectures, virtual field trips, government resources, references, organizations, and an online glossary.

4.  How is the software coordinated with the book?
The ACE Practice Tests are matched to the chapter of the textbooks. The Inside Geology area of Geologylink.com organizes web resources according to the chapter of the books. The Geology Explorer CD-ROM and Physical Geology Interactive web site (password protected) offer further instruction on key concepts in the textbooks.

5.  Can students do quizzes and submit them to the instructor? In what form (electronic or paper) would students submit it? How secure is ACE as an assessment tool?
Students can either email their results to instructor or print them and hand them in. ACE is intended as a self-study tool rather than for graded tests.

Visitors accessing our Physical Geology Interactive will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Yes. All products are cross-platform.

9.  How do I / how do my students get this product (i.e., does it come with the book, do I order it separately, can I buy it online, etc.)?
The CD-ROM comes with every copy of Chernicoff's Geology, 2/e or Chernicoff and Fox's Essentials of Geology, 2/e. Passwords for the protected parts of the site are also included with the textbooks.

10.  How much do the products cost?
The software and web products are available at no extra charge with the purchase of a textbook.

11.  Does the web site require a password?
Portions of the web site are open to the public while other portions require a password. The password-protected areas are Physical Geology Interactive, Peterson's Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals, and the ACE Practice Tests.

12.  How do I get a password? For how long a period are the passwords good?
Passwords are distributed at no charge with the textbook. Instructors can get a password by contacting their sales representative or by calling our Faculty Services Center at 1-800-733-1717. Passwords are good for six months after first log-in.

13.  Do students have to buy a book or password to get access to your web site?
Many areas of the web site are not password protected, and are open to anyone. Password protected areas are indicated on the web site. For access to these areas, students must purchase the text + CD package, which includes a unique passkey code to allow access to these areas.

14.  If students buy a used book without a CD, can they still get the CD?
No, they cannot.

15.  Can I use materials from your web site in my class?
Geologylink.com is a Houghton Mifflin web site that is open to anyone in the geologic community. Professors and students are welcome to use geologylink.com whether or not they are using a Houghton Mifflin product. 16.  Can I view PowerPoint slides if I do not have Microsoft Office installed on my computer?
Yes. PowerPoint viewer can be freely downloaded from www.microsoft.com.
