The Great American History Fact-Finder

Webster-Ashburton Treaty

(August 9, 1842), agreement between the United States and Great Britain fixing the Maine-New Brunswick border and ending a threat of war between the two countries. The United States obtained land that included the fertile Aroostook Valley and about two hundred square miles at the head of the Connecticut River. The negotiators of the treaty were Secretary of State Daniel Webster for the United States and Baron Ashburton for Great Britain.
