The Great American History Fact-Finder

Virginius Affair

(1873), incident during the Cuban rebellion against Spain, which almost involved the United States in a war with Spain. Spanish authorities captured Virginius, a Cuban merchant ship commanded by an American, which was illegally flying the American flag. Fifty-three passengers and crew members, including some Americans, were shot as pirates on the assumption that they were aiding Cuban rebels. Spain agreed that the action was inappropriate and paid reparations to the families of the American victims.
