(1770?-1843), Cherokee silversmith who developed a written alphabet for his people. Sequoyah's system, completed in 1821 and consisting of over eighty symbols, enabled thousands of Cherokees to read and write in their own language. The giant sequoia tree and Sequoia National Park are named for him.
