awards given annually for distinguished work in journalism, literature, and music. Funded through an endowment left by newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer, prizes of $1,000 each have been bestowed since 1917 on the recommendation of a Columbia University advisory board. A gold medal is awarded for public service.
