The Great American History Fact-Finder

Proclamation of 1763

order issued by King George III of England at the end of the French and Indian War establishing the lands west of the Appalachians as an Indian reserve. In response to Pontiac's Rebellion, during which hundreds of white settlers had been killed along the western frontier, the proclamation prohibited settlers from moving west of the Appalachians and ordered those already there to return to the East. The American colonists strongly opposed and largely ignored the order.
