Morse, Wayne

(1900-74), politician. A liberal from Oregon, Morse served in the U.S. Senate as a Republican from 1945 to 1951 and as a Democrat from 1957 to 1967. An outspoken opponent of the war in Vietnam, Morse was one of two senators who voted against the Tonkin Gulf Resolution in 1964. He lost bids for reelection in 1968 and 1972. Morse once filibustered against offshore oil drilling for 22 ½ hours.
