The Great American History Fact-Finder

League of Women Voters

(1920), nonpartisan organization that encourages public participation in government. Founded in Chicago by Carrie Chapman Catt and members of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the League of Women Voters has branches in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The league, which welcomed men in 1974, promotes political education and voter registration. It has sponsored presidential campaign debates since 1976.
