The Great American History Fact-Finder

Hudson, Henry

(?-1611), English explorer. Hudson explored North America in an unsuccessful search for the Northwest Passage. During the third of his four voyages, he sailed up the Hudson River to the present-day site of Albany and as far south as North Carolina. Sailing under the Dutch flag, he claimed some of the land for the Netherlands. Later, representing England, he explored Hudson Bay. Set adrift by his mutinous crew, he was left to die and never seen again.
