(May 6, 1937), a spectacular explosion of the German dirigible while it maneuvered to land at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The Hindenburg, the world's first transatlantic commercial airliner, was to provide luxurious air service between New Jersey and Germany. It was destroyed by fire when the airship's hydrogen ignited, claiming thirty-six lives. A radio broadcaster, there to describe the landing, gave a famous eyewitness account of the disaster as it occurred.
