Henri, Robert

(Robert Henry Cozad; 1865-1929), art teacher and painter. Henri founded the Ashcan school of realistic painting. As instructor at the Art Students League from 1915 to 1923, Henri fostered the development of modern painting in America and inspired a generation of young artists, including John Sloan, Edward Hopper, and George Bellows. His influential book The Art Spirit (1923) expresses his philosophy on art.
