Handy, W. C

(William Christopher; 1873-1958), black jazz musician and blues composer. Known as the father of the blues (which was the title of his 1941 autobiography), Handy composed such songs as "St. Louis Blues," "Beale Street Blues," and "Memphis Blues," and conducted a band for many years.
