Goldman, Emma

(1869-1940), Russian-born U.S. political activist. Goldman immigrated to the United States in 1886 and copublished a monthly magazine, Mother Earth (1908), with fellow anarchist Alexander Berkman. Arrested several times for her activi´ties supporting birth control and the rights of workers, she was sent to prison in World War I for opposing conscription. Upon her release in 1919, she was deported to Russia with other anarchists. She became disillusioned with the Soviet system and spent the rest of her life in Europe and Canada.
