Gibson, Josh

(1911-47), baseball player barred from the major leagues because he was black. As a star catcher for the Negro National League, Gibson led in home runs for ten consecutive years and was considered the greatest power hitter in baseball history. It is estimated that he hit over 950 home runs in his career and had a lifetime batting average of .347. He became a member of baseball's Hall of Fame in 1972.
