The Great American History Fact-Finder

Dole, Sanford

(1844-1926), lawyer and political leader in the Hawaiian Islands. Dole owned vast pineapple and sugar cane plantations in Hawaii and worked to protect his huge business interests there. An associate justice on the Hawaiian Supreme Court, he helped lead a revolution in Hawaii for a government that was more democratic but also represented the interests of the white elite. Queen Liliuokalani was deposed, and Dole became president of the provisional government in 1893. He served as president of the Republic of Hawaii from 1894 to 1898 and first governor of the territory of Hawaii from 1900 to 1903.
