The Great American History Fact-Finder

De Soto, Hernando

(1500?-42), Spanish explorer and adventurer. While searching for gold, De Soto led one of the earliest European expeditions to sight the Mississippi River (May 1541). He continued his unsuccessful search for gold on either side of the river but died of fever during the expedition. His body was committed to the waters of the Mississippi.
