Brando, Marlon

(1924- ), actor. Brando received critical acclaim in 1947 with his stage interpretation of Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, a role he re-created in the motion picture in 1951. He starred in Viva Zapata (1952), The Wild One (1953), and Julius Caesar (1953), among other films, and won the Academy Award for his performances in On the Waterfront (1954) and The Godfather (1972). He has also been active in social causes, such as improving conditions for American Indians.
