Baez, Joan

(1941- ), folksinger, composer, guitarist, and political activist. Baez, known for her strong, pure soprano voice and her straightforward renditions of folk ballads, became deeply involved in the civil rights and the anti-Vietnam War movements during the 1960s and 1970s. An advocate of nonviolence, she has written many songs protesting war, discrimination, and injustice.
