PocketMac Software Connects Macs with Playstation Portables
(March 30, 2005) Information Appliance Associates has released PocketMac for PSP, which enables Mac users on OS 10.3 or higher to sync music, photos and contact information to a Playstation Portable (PSP). PocketMac for PSP syncs music from iTunes and photos from iPhoto to a PSP handheld. Since the PSP does not have contact management built in, the PocketMac programs converts contacts from Microsoft Entourage or the OS X Address Book into compact images for viewing on the PSP. PocketMac for PSP users can sync directly over a USB connection or to a Memory Stick to be read on the PSP. A limited introductory price of $10 is being offered now for PocketMac for PSP. Go to http://www.pocketmac.net/psp.html for more information.

Mac Web Browsers Receive Security Updates
(March 23, 2005) This week, two popular, free web browsers for Mac OS X, Apple Safari and Mozilla FireFox, were updated to address security concerns. On Monday, Apple released Security Update 2005-003 for OS 10.3.8 (available through Software Update). This update includes a fix to a vulnerability discovered in Safari that allowed certain maliciously registered domain names to appear as legitimate sites. Safari can display Unicode characters in URLs, making it possible for users to see foreign language sites in their native language. Before the update, scam sites used to collect account numbers and other personal information could exploit a vulnerability by using look-alike characters to trick people into thinking they were viewing a website that they really were not. With the Security Update 2005-003, the default list of scripts that can be displayed natively does not include look-alike scripts such as Cherokee, Cyrillic and Greek that could be used to trick people. For more information on this security update, click here.

Today the Mozilla Foundation released Firefox 1.0.2, which patched a bug identified by the security research company Internet Security Systems. Mozilla claims that no known exploits of the bug had been reported and that they were able to provide a quick response to the bug. To download the update, visit www.mozilla.org/products/firefox.

Two New Apple iPod Minis Add Color and Battery Life
(February 23, 2005) Apple continues to make its iPod line ever more attractive with two new iPod Minis announced today. The new Minis will come in four colors: the silver held over from the previous Minis, as well as the new blue, pink and green colors. The size, design and control system remain the same, however, the minis now advertise up to 18 hours of battery life--increased from the previous 12 hours.

Down from $250, the 4GB iPod Mini (approximately 1,000 songs) now costs $200, and a new 6GB iPod Mini (approximately 1,500 songs) costs $250. Both models include earbuds, a USB 2.0 cable for syncing/charging and a belt clip. Also, if you purchase one from http://store.apple.com, Apple is currently offering free shipping and a free laser engraving.

review image Call of Duty: United Offensive Expansion Pack

Nothing makes us clap like trained seals more than a new WWII first-person shooter. We're absolutely bananas about the genre, and as big fans of the original game (we awarded it four out of five apples in our August, 2004 issue), we couldn't wait to load up the Call of Duty: United Offensive Expansion Pack (CoD:UO). Happily, this gem of a follow-up did not disappoint.

The game is non-stop action, with 13 new singleplayer missions (featuring the Americans, British and Soviets)--quite a lot of original gameplay for an expansion. There are also 11 new multiplayer maps, with three new modes, including some using vehicles. The inclusion of jeeps and tanks is great; it's very fun to run up, jump in a tank, blast away and then scamper off.
