(March 23, 2005) This week, two popular, free web browsers for Mac OS X, Apple Safari and Mozilla FireFox, were updated to address security concerns. On Monday, Apple released Security Update 2005-003 for OS 10.3.8 (available through Software Update). This update includes a fix to a vulnerability discovered in Safari that allowed certain maliciously registered domain names to appear as legitimate sites. Safari can display Unicode characters in URLs, making it possible for users to see foreign language sites in their native language. Before the update, scam sites used to collect account numbers and other personal information could exploit a vulnerability by using look-alike characters to trick people into thinking they were viewing a website that they really were not. With the Security Update 2005-003, the default list of scripts that can be displayed natively does not include look-alike scripts such as Cherokee, Cyrillic and Greek that could be used to trick people. For more information on this security update, click here.
Today the Mozilla Foundation released Firefox 1.0.2, which patched a bug identified by the security research company Internet Security Systems. Mozilla claims that no known exploits of the bug had been reported and that they were able to provide a quick response to the bug. To download the update, visit www.mozilla.org/products/firefox.
