BAFTA Winners and More in Road to the Oscars The Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) loved The Aviator and Vera Drake, awarding Martin Scorsese's film four wins (including Best Picture) and Mike Leigh's film three (though Leigh beat out Scorsese for Best Director). See the rest of the BAFTA winners (did Kate Winslet, nominated twice, win anything?) in our Road to the Oscars section. While there check out the recent results of the SAGs and our huge passel of photos (from our good friends at WireImage) from the events. Also, vote for the nominees YOU'D like to see win in our 2005 Oscar Poll and check out the results of our glorious, user-picked Best of 2004 poll and the not so glorious Worst of 2004 poll. It's all in our Road to the Oscars section, presented this year by Kotex.
IMDb Movie of the Day
When it was announced in 1999 that Julia Roberts would be getting $20 million for her next movie, Erin Brockovich, the question wasn't so much was the pretty woman worth the high paycheck as it was, "What the hell is an Erin Brockovich?" To the residents of Hinkley, California, though, Ms. Brockovich was nothing less than a savior and a legal whirlwind, having taken on the conglomerate of Pacific Gas & Electric after suspicions arose that the utility had poisoned the town's water supply with toxic chromium. Crusading with fierce determination, the young woman brought about one of the biggest class lawsuits in American history, and won it – not too shabby for an unemployed single mother who had never even laid eyes on a law school. While the true story was definitely film-worthy, what got the project industry attention was the pairing of America's sweetheart with America's art-house poster boy, Steven Soderbergh, a director who hadn't yet lived up to the hit status promised by sex, lies and videotape. What many thought was an unholy alliance turned out to be a marriage made in heaven, as the resulting movie was a star vehicle with lots of power, intelligence and box office stamina (it grossed $126 million). Ably supported by both Albert Finney and a Wonderbra, Roberts gave a career-best performance and finally nabbed an Academy Award. Soderbergh didn't fare too badly at the Oscars either – he became the first director in sixty years to receive dual Best Director nominations, winning for his other movie that year, Traffic. - Mark Englehart
