Based in Los Angeles, E! Online was launched August 5, 1996, as the comprehensive entertainment-news Website.
E! Online has been acknowledged by Yahoo! Internet Life as one of the "Most Popular Entertainment Sites" on the Web, and the magazine also named E! Online as "Best Entertainment News and Gossip Site" two years in a row. Family PC magazine named E! Online the "Best Entertainment News Website," Teen People listed E! Online as "One of the Five Best Entertainment News Websites," and the San Francisco Chronicle chose E! Online as "One of the Five Best Gossip Sites on the Web." When Entertainment Weekly ranked gossip columnists, only E! Online's Ted Casablanca received an "A," and USA Today said about the site, "E! gets an A!"
America Online, E! Online and E! Entertainment Television formed a strategic content and promotional alliance under which E! Online and E! Entertainment Television will provide their original, industry-leading entertainment news and celebrity gossip across several AOL brands, including Moviefone, ICQ, Netscape and the newly launched AOLTV(sm). AOL will be promoting E! Online via online and offline advertising and distribution channels.
In November 1998, E! Online launched shop.eonline.com, the primary source for all E!-branded merchandise.
E! Online attracts users from more than 100 countries, including Canada, Greece, Australia, England, Yugoslavia and Brazil. In September 1999, E! Online (along with AsiaContent) launched E! Online Asia, the company's first international content-partnership Website. AsiaContent will manage exclusive distribution rights for all E! Online content throughout key Asian markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Malaysia and Taiwan. In September 2000, E! Online partnered with Sweden's NonStop Online AB to launch E! Online in the Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland.
E! Online has ongoing Web partnerships with AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, Excite, NBCi, MSNBC and RealNetworks as well as broadband and convergence-application alliances with WebTV, RoadRunner, Wink and World Gate.
