Meta Filter bites Total words: 152
Meta-Filter really bites. There have been a number of discussions there over the last several months that I wanted to get involved in. Of course registration and membership is required: no big deal right. Oh.. but it is.
Trying to register brings you to this notice which hasn't changed in months
If they are not interested in new members then I think it is time they change thier infomation and say that new membership is permenantly closed and live an incestuous existance. The part of the internet that meta-filter inhabits now has a big sign in my mind that states There be monsters here.

While MetaFilter goes through another bout of growing pains, it's time to regroup and reprogram to better handle the crowds. During that time all new user signups are closed. How long is this going to last? Additionally there is no way of contacting the webmaster or support anywhere.

meat and potatoes Total words: 375
Lately my posts haven't had much in the way of meat and potatoes. I have been tending to link to other posts or sites and providing very little commentary on these items. This is primarily due to being distracted with photoshop and the photoshop training video series that I acquired. Deke, the host of the series, is an absolute photoshop god and I can only hope to become one tenth as good at photoshop as he is.
The other thing is the essays that I am working on this semester are the two most difficult essays yet. Research methods because the question is so detailed and exact and that the material is difficult and extremetly boring.
Fortunately I have the answers, now I just need to convert it to academic speak.

Unaccredited Degrees Total words: 49
Scott has linked to a useful list of schools that are not acredited and unrecognized accrediting bodies. I'm sure that anyone considering doing a degree at a "non" famous school will find the list useful in determining whether the time and money will be worth it.

interesting posts Total words: 73
Two interesting but entirely unrelated posts that others may find interesting. First about the quality of Foreign English Educators in Japan vs Korea, Dan posts an email and his response to it: here. A very interesting read and Dan uses a wonderful analogy with Enron.
The second link is to Kerim's post about Whorf. If you haven't read either of these posts I'm sure you will find them interesting and worth thinking about.

Endnote - intext citations Total words: 264
I use endnote for formating all of my bibliographies and in text citations. This program has got to be the greatest tool that every graduate student needs. I no longer need to worry about when to italicize something or where to place commas or semi-colons. All I do is fill in the fields and the program updates it database. When working in MSword it is fully integrated and with the click of a button citations are inserted, both in text and in the references page. Of course I am using APA as that is what linguistics uses for citations but endnote offers over 1,100 different styles.
Of course I am not utilizing the program to it's fullest potential. I don't even know a tenth of what it can do, but for what I do use, I find it indispensable. Now one feature that I had trouble utilizing was getting the in text citations to included the cited pages. I eventually asked a professor for help, 3 semesters ago. I thought I would share this information with others.

Blogs in the classroom Total words: 35
An interesting article in the New York Times today about using blogs in the classroom. While this article is not directly about teaching ESL it is easy to see the application to the ESL context.

Relevance Theory Online Total words: 80
Relevance Theory Online is a bibliography of relevancy theory organized thematically with some links to pdf articles. I'm sure that many linguistics students will find it useful. I will be looking at it in more detail today as I get ready to start writing my latest essay.
Hat tip to David who sent me the link via email. I've also added this information to my links directory, which any one is free to use and add links if they wish.

updated links & more Total words: 123
I updated my blogroll last night. I added three more links and deleted two. In the next little while I will be paying more careful attention to dead links and links to sites that no longer update.
Just a reminder that if readers would like to write a post here all that you need to do is register in order to have a username and then contact me so that I can change your permissions, giving you author status. The same also goes for writing book reviews on the book review site. You can write a review there on any book that you like, love, or hate. Linguistics and teaching oriented books are preferred, but any title is okay including fantasy, biography etc...
