Man sues trooper who ticketed him for middle-finger gesture

Posted: 02/04/2005 07:00:32

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A Pittsburgh man is suing a state trooper he says ticketed him for making an obscene hand gesture.

Stephen Corey says the trooper gave him two tickets last summer: one for following another vehicle too closely and the other for give an improper hand signal.

But Corey says flipping someone the middle finger is protected under the First Amendment's right to freedom of speech.

The trooper, though, defends the ticket. He says the man gave him the finger as part of a gesture that indicated he was changing lanes.
