Doesn’t milk do a body good?

Filed under: — The Marmot @ 11:14 pm (Visited 1304 times)

milk nude

Gee, these judges are no fun. In an appeals case Friday, Seoul District Court handed out fines to three nude models and an employee of a certain milk company for a nude advertising performance that the firm put on in January 2003 to promote the launch of a new yogurt product. The show, held in a gallery in Insa-dong, targeted passers-by and featured the three models – one of whom was the head of the Korea Nude Models’ Association – using sprayers to, well, spray each other with yogurt. Anyway, the court ruled the performance a “lewd act” and fined the milk company employee W5 million for staging the event. Performer and Nude Model Association head Ms. Park was fined W2 million, while the other two yogurt girls will have to fork over W500,000 big ones each for their sins.

Of course, what gets me is you can get fined for doing it, but it’s perfectly OK for Korea’s state-owned media company Yonhap to run a photo of it. Not that I’m complaining, of course

English piece here.

Hey, does yoghurt cause yeast infections?

What can you say about a nude performance like this - artsy fartsy…

I prefer art to be about things that don’t involve body-secretions…

I cannot agree more. I enjoy lurking different blog sites about Korea due to my interests in Korean culture. I guess this type of crap is the reason why I am actually commenting here, otherwise I would just be “lurking.” Maybe the true intent of the blogger is to incite people to post as many comments as possible, more so than other Korea blog sites.

People in general have very little interests in substantive news than tabloid crap. Just flip throught the American TV channels, walk though a checkout stand at a shopping center, or I guess even visit a blog site about Korea.

How would an American’s view about Korea be shaped if he were to just learn bout Korea from reading Marmot’s blogs? Would he get a true picture of Koreans and Korea? I know that if I were a Korean and only info I learn about America is from the National Enquirer, I would get a twisted and warped view about America and the Americans.

  23. william is awesome, he makes me remember back when I was first “interested in Korean culture". I learned the language, I studied the economy, I listened to Korean music, I had lots of gyopo friends. I’d never been to Korea before. My Korean teacher asked me on more than one occassion, “Why are you interested in Korea? I think you’ll be disappointed” After living here for 2 1/2 years, I think I appreciate the sentiment.

William may I recommend China or Vietnam? Vietnam in particular will be an interesting country over the next 20 years, and since they beat us Yanks they don’t have an inferiority complex hanging over and defining the entire country.

In terms of Marmot’s uni-dimensional content - well, there’s this thing called the Internet that has multitudes of views and ways of looking at topics such as Korea. I’d suggest checking it out.

  27. Now now, William is obviouslly not a Korean complaining about coverage over Korean tabloid crap on this blog. It’s obvious due to the France jibe which wouldn’t have any contextual meaning to South Koreans.

On the other hand, I can’t particularly defend William or Mr. McManama-smith because I think they have totally misinterpreted the atmosphere of this blog. As Mr. Marmot himself once sallied forth to defend yours truly against out of the blue accusations of anti-semitism, I have to say that you are way off base in characterizing this blog. Far from some orientalist pedagogue out to slander Korea, Mr. Marmot’s blog is without a doubt the premier English language blog about Korea and is a great resource for those who want to read up about recent events. The current series of posts may have been to heavily focused on random tabloid crap, but no individual can single-mindedly devote his entire attention to serious events, at least not and remain sane at the same time. Perhaps it was just a slow news week in South Korea? To insinuate that this somehow indicates Mr. Marmot as denigrating Korea is flat out ludicrous, any reader who has perused this blog for any significant amount of time would be able to tell how wrong this comment is. Mr. Marmot’s commentary, when the discussion has actually been of any possible relevance regarding Korean issues, has always in my opinion been objective and nuanced. I’ve seen my fair share of self-styled experts that were more quacks than not, who pidgeonholed their experiences in the orient under easy to classify paradigms. Mr. Marmot is not one of them.

  35. I’m surprised that a fine bleeding-heart liberal like youself would actually be living in a rigid, intolerant, anti-western, hierarchial country like Korea; wouldn’t a country like France be more appropriate?

First off, William, I’ve been called a lot of things in my life, but “bleeding-heart liberal” was never one of them. I voted for Bush, for Christ’s sake.

Secondly, if you are getting your Korea news exclusively from blogs, well, I don’t know what to say. Blogs are personal websites, and they reflect the personal interests of those who write them. In this case, my interests happens to be North Korea, geopolitics and Korean tabloid crap. The latter primarily because a) as you correctly point out, it’s what people read, as any check of the Korean portal sites’ top pieces of the day would attest; b) they are short stories, allowing me to get in short posts while I work on other projects; and c) they’re fun and generally uncovered in Korea’s English language press, which also gives you a very perverted view of Korea – compare the English and Korean language media and you’ll see exactly what I mean. As I’ve said on many occasions, no one should ever view this blog as somehow “representative” of Korea, and under no circumstances should anyone rely exclusively on this blog for their Korean news and information. I shouldn’t even have to say it. I do this mostly for fun – I get paid for my dry, hard news translating by the Chosun Ilbo – and its content reflects that. If you find this blog’s content disagreeable, there are plenty of other blogs, many of which are excellect sources of information and commentary. Or even better, start your own blog.

P.S. – I never criticized Netizens for posting about English Spectrum gate. I’d be the last person to tell other people what to post on their own sites, especially when it comes to good old-fashioned tabloid crap. In fact, as I posted in Korean on one man’s blog, I agreed – for the most part – with the criticisms being made with a) the problematic English Spectrum forum AND the asinine “molestation post"; and b) the extrordinarily unhealthy importance attached to learning English in Korea; and c) the fact that just about any white person could come to Korea and teach English. My chief complaints were a) that some of the criticism of “the Party” being made was coming from sources that I felt shouldn’t be bitching about it (read: the JoongAng Ilbo) and that some – SOME – of the Internet response was racist and sexist in nature (read: Anti-English Spectrum) AND appeared to be encouraging acts of online and offline violence (I also had some problems with what I felt were mistranslation or misunderstandings involving the controversial websites). Other than that, I had no problem with Netizens – an extremely vibrant and diverse community for whom I have grown to have tremendous respect for the more I learn about them – having a little fun with the incident. Heck, I have a whole category dedicated to “Stupid Foreigner Tricks,” which happens to be my favorite one. When whitey gets in the Korean news doing something stupid, I’m usually the first to post on it. Heck, if a Korean were to base their judgments of Korea’s expat community just from what they read here, I shudder to imagine what they’d think. Luckily, like most rational human beings, Korean Netizens by and large do not rely on one man’s personal website to frame their opinions.
