How could the Academy have voted the entertaining lark Shakespeare in Love as Best Picture of 1998 over Saving Private Ryan? Personal experience perhaps. Most of the membership had mounted some theatrical production fraught with difficulty; none had risked their lives storming the beaches of Normandy. Steven Spielberg, the man whom John Wayne dressed down for even proposing a role in 1941 to him, moved into the realm of mythic filmmaker with this stark realization of Robert Rodat's WWII-themed script. After the D-Day landing, eight men are sent to the front of enemy lines on a mission to find one man, a Private James Ryan (Matt Damon), and return him safely home. In addition to the unknown soldier, Capt Miller (Tom Hanks), Spielberg centers on a coward, Corporal Upham (Jeremy Davies), to tell his story. It is this brave device, and Spielberg's refusal (probably against his own desires) to turn Upham into a conventional hero, that makes the film even more trenchant and true and human and knowing. It also makes Saving Private Ryan one of the best films ever made about war.
