I love this show except for its lack of San Francisco locations, 5 November 1999
Author:
Todd Victor Leone (Todd1952) from San Francisco, California
This show is lots of fun. Three sisters, Prue, Phoebe and Piper Halliwell,
who supposedly live in an old San Francisco Victorian House, have discovered
in young adulthood that their late mother was a witch who passed her powers
on to them. They just didn't take effect until their Grandmother, their
guardian, passed on. Now they have to develop their powers and use them for
good, and there's a lot of supernatural evil going on for them to combat.
The three Halliwell sisters are appealingly portrayed by Shannen Doherty,
Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs. San Francisco is not portrayed well at
all by Los Angeles! The house they live in is actually on Bonnie Brae
Avenue in L.A. in a small pocket of Victorian houses. Unlike S.F. houses,
it's on a street of detached homes with driveways between leading to rear
detached garages. At certain angles of filming, you can see the skyscrapers
of downtown Los Angeles behind the house as the camera looks down the
driveway. I suppose people who have never been in either city won't know
the difference, but I do. The occasional stock footage inserted here and
there may fool some, but not all!
If Nash Bridges can film here in San Francisco, why not Charmed?
But apart from this one complaint, I haven't missed an episode since I
started watching Charmed because it's very entertaining and lots of fun! TV
is entertainment and not all of it can be intense drama or a half-hour
sitcom. It's nice to have a show that's an hour long with fun story lines
that's pure fantasy.
You're hearing this from someone who likes E.R., Sports Night, Frasier and
The Practice, among other shows . . . .
