IMDb Movie of the Day
In the course of operatic history, Turandot's dramatic plot, soaring music, and especially its exotic locale have captured the collective imagination of millions, making it one of the most popular operas ever written. Puccini himself would surely have been proud of artistic vision and creative drive exhibited by conductor Zubin Mehta and film-director-turned-stage-director Zhang Yimou's 1998 production of his opera, painstakingly documented on film here by Allan Miller and aptly titled The Turandot Project. While containing a healthy sprinkling of musical moments, it should be noted that music is not the primary focus of this documentary. Instead, Miller's cameras capture the fascinating artistic and practical struggles that took place making this production possible in Beijing's Forbidden City, including the political difficulties. The documentary also excels at capturing the true visual essence of this production, which Mehta and Zhang tailored to be as authentic to the surrounding culture as possible. With staging costs soaring to near $15 million, the production seems to take on a life of it's own, turning into a point of pride for not only for the professional performers, but for everyone from locals brought in to help with the costumes through to the real Chinese army members brought to perform as soldiers in the opera. In the end, it seems the production is one great drive to free Turandot from the restraints of its usual Italian existence, and to make it entirely China's own. - Heather Campbell

Sundance Sims What's Molly Sims doing in Sundance? We don't know either (and, honestly, we don't care, we're just glad she's here) but you can certainly see her for yourself in our photo gallery for the festival. She's one of the many celebrities bundled up and either promoting or watching movies and taking time to visit our very good friends at WireImage (they're once again the official photographers of the event) For the inside track on what's hot and what's not visit our daily blog. We also have a handy-dandy list of all the films at Park City. We're adding new photos every day in the Road to Sundance section.
