FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
250 Bombs Dropped on Sudanese Civilians in the Month of July
In the month of July the level of bombing escalated. At least 33 separate bombing incidents took place. The town of Rumbek was bombed twice, killing and injuring many people in the market place. On one day alone three different locations were bombed while planes chartered by humanitarian agencies were on the ground. The targeting of Sudanese civilians and the humanitarian agencies assisting them is in direct violation of international law. The specific targeting of NGO compounds, planes, airstrips, clinics, humanitarian distribution points and other facilities has had a significant negative impact on the level and quality of aid being delivered. Humanitarian NGOs continue to be firmly committed to providing critically needed assistance to the people of Sudan. We fear that the recent aerial bombardment by the Government of Sudan will only exacerbate further the fragile humanitarian situation of many in Sudan.
