StyleCountry, rock
Original line-up: Glenn Shorrock (vocals; ex-Twilights), Brian Cadd (vocals, piano; ex-Groop), Chris Stockley (guitar, vocals; ex-Cam-Pact), Don Mudie (bass; ex-Groop), Doug Lavery (drums; ex-Doug Parkinson In Focus, Valentines)
 Albums: Fool's Gold (EMI/Parlophone, 1970), If Only . . . (Warner Reprise, 1971).

History
Axiom was deservedly touted as Australia's first `supergroup'. The band's formation in May 1969 brought together five experienced and talented musicians. One of the main inspirations behind Axiom's blend of rock and country was The Band's landmark Music from Big Pink album. Axiom achieved three Top 10 hit singles, and issued arguably the first local rock album that embraced Australian lyric themes (Fool's Gold).

The band's chart success was instant when the Cadd/Mudie-penned singles `Arkansas Grass'/ `Samantha' (December 1969) and `A Little Ray of Sunshine'/`Ford's Bridge' (April 1970) reached #7 and #5 respectively. Don Lebler (ex-Avengers) replaced Lavery and the band left for the UK in April 1970. Axiom's third single `Father Confessor'/`Time and Time Again' (July) and debut album Fool's Gold both failed to chart, perhaps due to the band's absence from the local scene.

In London, Axiom signed a three-year deal with Warner Reprise who flew the band to Los Angeles in September 1970 to record the album If Only . . . Upon returning to Australia in October, Axiom toured and issued a fourth single, the exceptional `My Baby's Gone'/`Hold the Phone' (#8 in February 1971). If Only . . . was a more polished album than Fool's Gold but it received little attention when issued later in the year. If Only . . . and `My Baby's Gone' were both issued in the USA.

Axiom returned to England during February 1971, but broke up a month later. Before the final split, Axiom recorded one of the first colour film clips by an Australian band (for `My Baby's Gone'). In Australia, Parlophone issued the year-old `Ford's Bridge'/`Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow' as a final single. Lebler joined The Mixtures. Cadd and Mudie wrote and recorded as a duo before Brian Cadd embarked on a successful solo career. Shor-rock joined international-flavoured band Esperanto before returning to Australia and joining Little River Band. Stockley went on to work with a succession of bands like Sunshine, Wizard, Winchester and Ceduna (which included Don Mudie and ex-Mixtures drummer Mick Holden) before joining The Dingoes in 1973 and The Stockley See Mason Band in 1978.
