History
In between commitments to his solo career, former Saints/Laughing Clowns guitarist Ed Kuepper found time in April 1991 to play a series of gigs around Sydney with a band he dubbed The Aints. The name `Aints' was derived from an old bass drum head that had belonged to former Saints drummer Ivor Hay. The `S' in the lettering for The Saints' name had worn off, leaving `aints'. The Aints was an opportunity for Kuepper to reclaim some of the electric intensity that had characterised his former bands.

The subsequent limited edition `authorised bootleg' live album S.L.S.Q. (which stands for `Strictly Limited Sound Quality') featured manic renditions of Saints classics like `Know Your Product', `This Perfect Day' and `Nights in Venice'. `(I'm) Stranded' was issued as a single. Within a year, The Aints (with Mark Dawson, drums, Artie Sledge, bass and Tim Hopkins, sax) had issued two fiery, distortion-drenched studio albums of original material, Ascension (November 1991) and Autocannibalism (June 1992). With blistering, guitar heavy tracks such as `Like an Oil Spill', `It's Still Nowhere', `Ill Wind' and `Linda and Abilene', these albums were the antithesis of Kuepper's solo work. Ascension paid dual homage to two of Kuepper's acknowledged influences: firstly, the record cover echoed that of The Stooges' Funhouse; and secondly, the album title was borrowed from jazz pioneer John Coltrane.

A third Aints studio album, Afterlife, remains unissued, although Hot Records put out the five track CD EP sampler Cheap Erotica in November 1993 and the compilation Shelflife Unlimited!!—Hotter Than Blazing Pistols!!! in August 1995.
