PLATINUM ROCKERS RETURN TO OZ
PLATINUM ROCKERS RETURN TO OZJet fans may have been disappointed in May, when the lads were forced to cancel dates on their last national tour, but all will be forgiven as the lads return during October to finish what hey started. The Melbourne 4-piece has completed another round-trip of the US where their Get Born album has been certified platinum (1 million sales). The new single, Cold Hard Bitch, is reminding Aussie fans of Jet's ability to rock, so don't be surprised if tickets for the forthcoming tour sell out within hours; Sydney and Adelaide Jet fans will have to be quick when tickets become available on August 16, closely followed by Melbourne on August 17. After strong sales and many successful tours, Jet could put the icing on the cake at this year's MTV Music Awards. Are You Gonna Be My Girl has been nominated for 3 Awards (Best Rock Video, Best New Artist and Best Editing) and Jet also have a chance at winning the 'Viewer's Choice Award'. With so much happening for the retro-rockers overseas, Aussie fans will be hoping for an uninterrupted tour schedule in October. To check the forthcoming Jet dates, click here.

REGURGITATOR SET TO MAKE HISTORY AS 'BAND IN A BUBBLE'
REGURGITATOR SET TO MAKE HISTORY AS Over the last decade, Regurgitator (pictured left) has ripped popular music apart, and with startling results. Their tongue-in-cheek take on mainstream culture has lifted them to the top of the charts, where they have comfortably existed alongside the music they parody so well. Now, in an act that once again sees them balance between insanity and brilliance, the Brisbane 3-piece has decided to record their latest album in a bubble located in Melbourne's Federation Square. The glass structure will allow people 24-hour access to the band over three weeks and be closely monitored by Channel [V]. I guess it's like Big Brother, but with talented people. This concept has existed for many years but the band was inspired to make it a reality after seeing a well-known stunt by an illusionist. "I felt a bit ripped off by David Blaine," Yeomans said, referring to the lunatic who suspended himself in a glass box over the River Thames in London last year. "He was just sitting there not doing anything all. I thought we could put the creative process under that kind of scrutiny." If you're not familiar with this Aria-award winning act, just click here to be transported to a list of their releases. Stay tuned for more 'Band In A Bubble' news on Whammo.

RECORD NUMBER OF CHART TOPPING LOCALS TO BE RECOGNISED BY ARIA
RECORD NUMBER OF CHART TOPPING LOCALS TO BE RECOGNISED BY ARIAIt's great to see Aussie artists topping the local charts and this year's Aria No.1 Chart Awards boast a long list of high-profile artists, thanks to bumper year for the locals. Kasey Chambers, Kylie Minogue, Delta Goodrem, The John Butler Trio, Guy Sebastian, Spiderbait, Shannon Noll, Pete Murray, Something For Kate, Jet, Paulini and the Hillsong Church have all achieved the coveted No. 1 position on either the ARIA Singles or Albums charts (or both) in the previous 12 months. Cynics may point to the success of Australian Idol finalists as a major contributor to that list, but even more impressive is rise of artists like John Butler; a rare independent chart-topper. While it might seem to be a strange awards ceremony - recognising the most commercially viable acts and labels - the point is to notice the success of locals and recognise the industry efforts that have helped to raise those acts to the top position. Maybe Aria can invent another awards ceremony to recognise the rising stars of our local music industry.

JENNY MORRIS AND HUSH TO RAISE CASH FOR THERAPY CENTRE
JENNY MORRIS AND HUSH TO RAISE CASH FOR THERAPY CENTREFor the second year running, Jenny Morris & Friends will raise money for The Golden Stave Music Therapy Centre by performing a one-off gig. Last year Jenny attracted a star-studded line-up including Diesel, members of INXS, James Blundell, Doug Williams and Melinda Schneider. 2004 sees the return of James, Doug and Melinda as well as Jimmy Barnes, Deni Hines, Rick Price, Billy Thorpe and re-introducing, for the first time on-stage together in 27 years, legendary 70’s glam rockers, Hush. That's right, the original line-up of Keith Lamb, Rick Lum, Smiley Pailthorpe and Les Gock will rock on stage together for this special occasion. “It's been nearly 30 years since this group of desparates have been on stage together," explained Les Gock. "We hope that Nordoff Robbins will forgive us for using their name as an excuse get together on stage. If it wasn't for Nordoff Robbins and APRA it would be another 30 years before HUSH got together on stage again". If you believe that music is therapeutic, you'll be happy to know that the The Golden Stave Music Therapy Centre is pushing the boundaries, exploring 'development and change through the power of music'. Music therapy at the Golden Stave Music Therapy Centre is based on the Nordoff-Robbins approach, which emphasises improvisation and other creative techniques. Let's hope Jenny & Friends can top 2003's impressive fund-raising effort ($35,000). Tickets are $175.00, which covers food, beverages and includes a tax deductible donation of $75.00. KEITH URBAN: NEW ALBUM, NEW LABEL, NEW AUSSIE TOUR
KEITH URBAN: NEW ALBUM, NEW LABEL, NEW AUSSIE TOURKeith Urban, Australia's loveable contribution to the mainstream country market in the US, is virtually a permanent resident in the Billboard Top 50. Now, after chalking up over 2 million sales of his album Golden Road, Keith is the proud recipient of double-platinum status. Ironically, the guitar whiz still remains in the single platinum category in his homeland. Hopefully Aussie country music fans can get over the 'tall poppy' syndrome to welcome his new album, Be Here, with open arms. The fresh tunes will be available on September 20 and this time Capitol/EMI Australia will be handling the campaign due to a recent deal between the Aussie label and Urban. John O'Donnell, Managing Director of EMI Australia, was rapt to have the high profile country talent join his team:

"All of us at EMI Australia are incredibly proud to be working with Keith...(He) has gone from strength to strength over the past decade, both here and in the US, and we look forward to being part of that journey. Having heard many of the tracks from the upcoming album, I couldn't be more excited about what is ahead of us. This is definitely the record that will establish Keith as a global superstar."

For Keith's Aussie fans the near future looks bright; Urban will return to Australia in September and tour dates will be announced soon. Make sure you check Whammo tours for details and always remember: our tour page covers all genres including country, roots, folk and any other style of music you care to mention. Check it out. As for Be Here, Whammo will make the new album available for pre-order weeks before its official release date.

PM GIVES THUMBS-UP TO SLIM DUSTY CENTRE
PM GIVES THUMBS-UP TO SLIM DUSTY CENTREThe Australian government will contribute most of the money they've stolen from me over the last few years to help make the Slim Dusty Centre a reality. Finally, our hard-earned cash is being spent on something decent. $1.5 million will go toward the centre that will continue to do exactly what the unforgettable godfather of Australian country did through his life-long career: support the growth of country music. Kempsey will be the location for the centre, not too far away from the property where Slim wrote his first tune. John Howard didn't leave out too many details when he made his official announcement:

"I am delighted to announce that the Australian Government will provide $1.5 million to help establish the Slim Dusty Centre in Kempsey. The Slim Dusty Centre will link Slim's life and his music with our culture, our land and people. The greater part of the Australian Government's contribution towards the Centre, which will come from the Government's Regional Partnerships programme, will be used to construct the Centre and to fit out two transport-related interactive displays in the museum: the 'Truckies' and 'Ridin' the Rails' displays. The Truckies display will highlight the life of long distance truck drivers through the song 'Lights on the Hill' and 'Ridin' the Rails' display will emphasise the importance of rail transport in Australia's development and culture. It is proposed that the Slim Dusty Centre will, in addition to a museum of Slim Dusty's life and music, incorporate a gallery and concert facility, an entertainment venue for country music and a recording studio. The Centre will provide employment and create further tourism opportunities for Kempsey. The Centre will be a celebration of a great life. Slim is Australia's most prolific and best selling recording artist. Slim was awarded 36 Golden Guitars at the Tamworth Country Music Awards, was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and the Country Music Roll of Renown and was named Father of the Year and Senior Australian of the Year in 1999. I congratulate all those who have come together to support this project, including the Slim Dusty Foundation, and in particular Slim's wife Joy, Australia's Holiday Coast Area Consultative Committee, the local community and the state government. Through the Slim Dusty Centre, Slim's music will continue to touch the lives of many more Australians."

All cynicism aside, it's great news for the local country music industry. After all the warmongering expenditure of the illegal Iraq campaign, we're finally spending cash on something positive. I look forward to visiting what promises to be an icon of the local country music scene.

HAYES SET FOR A MASSIVE COMEBACK WITH POPULAR
HAYES SET FOR A MASSIVE COMEBACK WITH POPULARWell, after 2 years of ups and downs, Darren Hayes has finally emerged with a new single, Popular; the first single from his forthcoming album The Tension And The Spark. It's been a long and torturous wait for Darren's loyal fans who were treated to advance listening parties earlier in the year. August 23rd is the official release date for both formats of the new single, which went to Australian radio today. Australian media was less than kind to Darren when he released Spin but early signs suggest that both radio and television are appreciating his new musical direction; an obvious attempt to strive for a more alternative and creative sound. Channel [V] will feature Popular as their Ripe Clip of the week and you can be sure to keep up with Darren's career on Whammo. Musically, the new material is a departure from formulaic mainstream pop, recognising the changing sound of the genre, which seems to be shifting from light House production to a more electro feel. It's a gutsy move toward the future and a friendly jab at the industry, as Darren explains: “Popular is my take on our increasing obsession of Fame as a vocation. I’m pointing the finger at myself and the genre that brought me up – it is, also an incredibly exciting and crazy piece of music”. Two influential characters of electronic production, Robert Conley and Spike Stent, have contributed to the cutting edge sounds on the infectious new track. The video acts as a tribute to Darren's avid fans, with unrehearsed scenes in several London locations attracting warm and enthusiastic responses from the public and causing quite a stir on busy streets. In his 8 year career, Darren's musical projects have led to sales of over 23 million albums and The Tension And The Spark could tap into yet another new market; the electronic fraternity. Both formats of Popular are now available for pre-order from Whammo.

GOODREM'S FIRST PRODUCERS REVEAL 'LOST ALBUM'
GOODREMOh dear, here we go again; another pop star may be drawn into a legal battle. First it was Holly, then Candice and this time it's the princess of Australian pop, Delta Goodrem! After the Candice Alley debacle, I've got to be careful in this article because I don't want another mysterious rich-sounding gent calling Whammo, trying to convince me to change my copy. God forbid! So here are the facts. Despite attempts to present Delta's Innocent Eyes album as a debut, the actor come pop star had actually recorded an earlier effort. Let's face it, everyone wants to believe that the Innocent Eyes songs represented Delta's first musical creativity. It's a lovely Cinderella story. But Trevor Carter and Paul Higgins aren't buying into that fairytale. They were Delta's producers prior to the Innocent Eyes sessions and were ignored when the shining light of success illuminated their ex-charge. Now the lads want a piece of that limelight; or at least a piece of the profits. They'll be lodging an official statement of claim against Delta and her business partners: her parents. Even more lucrative than the chance of receiving a cut of Delta's royalties is the existence of that original album, which could mean millions of dollars in revenue for Higgins & Carter's Empire Records. But how can the two Empire Records producers prove all this? Well, they have a star witness. Glen Wheatley, who - it seems - was snubbed by the Goodrem family on the eve of last year's Aria Awards, has volunteered his clear memory of the events. After all, it's speculated that Wheatley arranged that original creative team for young Delta and used the results of their efforts to secure Goodrem’s current record deal. Did the Goodrem family buy into their fantasy world and actually imagine that the early recordings would stay buried? Did Wheatley, incensed by his treatment at the hands of the Goodrems actually kick-start this whole drama by contacting Higgins & Carter? Will rising pop kids and their parents ever recognise that the producers and managers that develop talent are professionals, who intend to be paid? It all seems very obvious but these legal battles are getting so common that I may as well create a template for news articles like this one. Stay tuned to Whammo as this story develops.

FRENZAL RHOMB V AUSTEREO IN BITTER FEUD
FRENZAL RHOMB V AUSTEREO IN BITTER FEUDJust when we needed a good dose of Aussie music controversy, Frenzal Rhomb has kick-started an enjoyable feud with Kyle & Jackie O from the Austereo Network. Let's hope it snowballs into something particularly nasty. Of course, with several hot-tempered personalities involved, it's already become an entertaining story. Let's begin at the beginning: the Bass In The Grass festival held in Darwin on July 10. The Rhomb boys were headlining but before they could get to the stage they were told their set would need to be pruned due to several other acts running over time. Knowing the Frenzal boys, they would have only been slightly miffed, but tempers were about to get frayed when the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory decided to say a few words before the set. Add to that the late (9 hours late) Jackie O arriving to say a spiel and the band were justifiably irate, realising they'd have to cut 7 songs from their set. I'm not sure whether the Minister or Jackie had bothered to become acquainted with the music and lyrics of Frenzal Rhomb because, quite frankly, they were asking for trouble. Lindsay decided to play the Thunderstruck riff over the top of Jackie's spiel, which was followed by an cutting tirade on the evils of televised pop contests like Popstars and Australian Idol. Just to set the scene, a number of established Australian acts have been dropped by major labels over the last twelve months. While no one could actually prove that this has occurred to make way for people like Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll, it seems very obvious to anyone in the industry that this negative shedding of local talent is a consequence of labels' preference for transient short-lived pop acts. I hope companies like BMG don't lose any sleep wondering why they've become the enemy. That was the whole point of Frenzal Rhomb's outburst. Jackie O left the stage upset and the band played on, which is why they were there in the first place. Then the real fun began. On Monday July 12, Jackie's producer, Ryan, was busy on the blower, calling Epitaph (Frenzal's label) to request an apology. Those familiar with the band will now be having a little giggle. The band refused, inspiring threats from the network saying Austereo would "bury the band", meaning this totally underground punk act would suddenly be missing from radio playlists. Anyone who knows the band is now laughing. It was a dumb idea to threaten a band that has nothing to lose; Jason Whalley (picture left during happier times), articulate frontman of the act, decided to accept the invitation to join Jackie O and Kyle for an interview. I guess the dynamic radio duo was out for blood, but it's evident from the transcript of the interview that the ruse backfired. Here are some highlights of the conversation that I lifted from the Out With The Old site. To check out the whole dramatic transcript, click here. To set the scene, I can assure you that the only people yelling during this conversation were Kyle and Jackie O:

J: ...If you ring up our record company, you people ring up our record company...threatening to bury the band...saying that we're never gonna get played on Austereo again...
K: Yep.
J: ...What the hell are we supposed to think? I mean, you've never played us...
K: Triple M, Triple M have, haven't they?
J: ...You've never supported us...
K: Have Triple M?
J: ...You don't support good, original Australian Music...
O: Yeah we do, but to suit the station...
J: You're not, you're a mouthpiece for the corporate music industry, and you always have been!
K: ...you're just like a f**king idiot that sits in the background not trying to get into the scene.
J: ...You're in this position where you can promote good, new, Australian talent, and you don't.
K: You've got to get over it, because there's going to be different types of music for different sorts of people. That's why you guys have been around for ten years, because you appeal to a certain group of people. Otherwise you'd be finished long ago. And so does Shannon Noll, and so do Popstars, everyone's got different tastes.
J: I know, you know what I care about? I care about the fact that there are bands like You Am I, good Australian bands, that are being dropped from their labels right now because, to make room for not only the Australian Idol winner...we're not just talking about the Australian Idol winner, which is full fair enough, we're talking about six of the losers, that are now being signed to these major record companies for what? For these completely short term careers...
K: Yep.
J: ...So the record company can make a quick buck...these bands aren't being nurtured...and for us to get up on stage and say, "Popstars, f**k 'em, f**k the lot of 'em, fu**king get f**ked, I'll stand by that, and I don't think that that should be offensive.
K: I don't care about Australian Idol or Popstars, I only care about Jackie and the embarrassment that she had at the hands of your band.
J: Well, I'm very sorry if you felt hurt Jackie. It wasn't intended to make you personally feel in any way uncomfortable up there on stage. We were up there to do our show, this is what we do, we basically, I can't see very many people that are championing the cause of young Australian bands that are trying to get by...
K: Just let me say, if it was me up there, it would have been on for young and old from the start.
J: Okay, now for a start, I'd just like to say, Jackie...were you aware that one of your security guards threatened our guitar tech with the threat of violence - as you're doing now Kyle, "it would have been on for young and old" as you say.
O: Yeah.
J: That security guard came up and threatened us with actual violence? Do you endorse that?
K: Yes, well I do.
J: You do? You endorse that? You would have come and punched on because we said something about Popstars and Australian Idol?
O: It wasn't about Popstars and Australian Idol.
J: Because you felt that somehow we'd offended you, or not given you enough time to speak up. You were nine hours late for your show...
O: Well f**k mate, at least give me a chance to say something. Like, it's so rude to just come in and say f**k you, f**k Jackie O and play the guitar over me. I was only going to talk for like, ten seconds, seriously.
J: If we're going to talk about rudeness, can you please just explain why your people are ringing up our record company telling us you're going to bury our band...
O: We're not going to bury your band...
J: And never getting played on Austereo again?
O: But yeah, probably won't get played.
J: (laughing in exasperaton) It never did get played!
O: It got played on Triple M.
K: That's because it was pretty much shit.
J: It got played at bloody midnight so they could fulfil their Australian content, it's bullshit.
K: Mate you are just so bitter, you may as well just take a new career path.
J: I'm not...(laughing). Okay...
K: You're sad, see you later, goodbye. (hangs up) Man, what a cock. Sorry everyone, we've got to go to the hot thirty countdown now.
O: We've run out of time.
K: I apologise to all the people that would have liked to have ring up and complain about the traffic today, and I don't like kids wearing seatbelts, but we had to sort that out because I loathe that situation.
O: Oh you, you do, god.
K: And the old, what are they called? Friends Of Romb? (snickering from both) They're dead to us. They're dead to us.

Just in case you're not familiar with seedy undertones, the Austereo network audience are Jackie O and Kyle fans, not Frenzal fans. It was a pretty gutless and potentially dangerous forum for their disdain of this seminal punk group. It will be interesting to hear the roles reverse when Jason and Lindsay from Frenzal Rhomb take over Triple J's Today Today program. I have a feeling that interview will rear its ugly head again; this time for an audience who are more sympathetic to the band. Here at Whammo, we're praying for a continuance of this tasty feud. So far the score is Frenzal Rhomb: 2; Kyle and Jackie O: Nil.

SELWYN GETS SHOT BY EMMY AWARD WINNING D.O.P.
SELWYN GETS SHOT BY EMMY AWARD WINNING D.O.P.Na, I didn't actually mean shot as in 'bang bang'; I'm talking about film. Gold-selling Australian R&B; artist, Selwyn, has become the first music artist to work with Emmy Award-winner, Jim Frazier. The pint-sized crooner met the famous Director Of Photography on the set of 3 The Hard Way; an action comedy starring Selwyn in his acting debut. Frazier recognised the recording artist's talents and agreed to a 15 hour shoot for Selwyn's new single, Boomin, from his forthcoming self-titled album. “It was an honour to work with Jim," said a chuffed Selwyn. "He had so many great ideas and I learnt a great deal in the 15 hours it took to shoot the clip. For me to be the first artist Jim has ever worked with on a video clip level is still very hard to digest, it’s just amazing.” The feeling appears to be mutual: “I see so much talent and untapped potential in Selwyn’s music and natural abilities," explained Frazier. "I really wanted to contribute to his work and hopefully help him achieve his goals.” Selwyn fans can expect to hear Boomin on Aussie radio from July 19.

CABLE CHANNEL SPOTLIGHTS LOCAL TALENT
CABLE CHANNEL SPOTLIGHTS LOCAL TALENTIt's great to see Australian music in command of the local charts and a lot of that success is due to the Australian media recognising the importance of local stars. Max (Foxtel/Optus/Austar) won ASTRA Award for 'Best Live Music Production' last year when they took a gamble on The Sessions: a series of intimate concert specials featuring Coldplay, John Mayer, Jack Johnson, The Whitlams, Alex Lloyd and Blondie. With Paul Hester hosting the show, The Sessions became a popular highlight of the Max schedule and inspired producers to go one better in 2004. So, with Aussie music going through a purple patch, Max decided to make series 2 an all-Australian affair, shifting the spotlight to 6 highly successful acts that have a strong reputation as great live entertainers. Kasey Chambers, Paul Kelly, George, The John Butler Trio, The Cat Empire and Pete Murray will showcase their talents each Saturday night, beginning at 6.30pm (EST), August 7. Here's the full line-up:

The MAX SESSIONS: AUSTRALIAN COLLECTION

MOVE OVER DELTA, HERE COMES KASEY
MOVE OVER DELTA, HERE COMES KASEYFor the second time in the last 12 months, a top female solo star has authoritatively commanded the #1 position on the Aria Album Charts. While our premier country songstress, Kasey Chambers, has a long way to go if she'd like to challenge Delta Goodrem's 2003 campaign, her new album Wayward Angel has outsold all other releases since it hit the shelves on May 31. Like A River continues to receive strong airplay, helping Kasey to maintain her stranglehold on the top position. John O'Donnell, MD of EMI Australia is justifiably chuffed: "It's great to see so many great Australian albums from real artists at the top of the ARIA albums chart. Obviously we're thrilled that Kasey's album is at number 1 again, making it four straight weeks after her number 1 debut." So, Kasey finally hits the road for an extended headliner tour over the next 3 months. Gigs will be in high demand following the success of Wayward Angel, so make sure you book tickets. Here are the dates...click here. To order Wayward Angel, click here.

TISM ADD DATES TO WHITE ALBUN TOUR
TISM ADD DATES TO WHITE ALBUN TOUROne of Australia's most warped and entertaining live acts, TISM, are on the road again and those 'in the know' will already be aware of the significance of any TISM tour. Firstly, the band rarely tour at all, so if you miss one of their gigs, don't expect to see them again for a couple of years. Secondly, they're probably one of the most bizarre acts to ever chart in this country. So, it's no real surprise that the masked marauders of black comedy are adding extra shows to their tour schedule. So far, Melbourne and Sydney will get an extra dose of madness, but I wouldn't be surprised if TISM's The White Albun (2 X DVDs + a full CD album) inspired more demand and extra shows in other cities. With songs like Everyone Has Had More Sex Then Me, I Rooted A Girl, Who Rooted A Guy, Who Rooted A Girl, Who Rooted A Guy, Who Rooted A Girl, Who Rooted Shane Crawford and Diffident Strokes, the new DVD/CD pack is a vivid reminder of this act's twisted appeal. [V] GEARS UP FOR NEW SEASON OF IDOL
[V] GEARS UP FOR NEW SEASON OF IDOLWell, it's back, whether you like it or not: Australian Idol. Yes, thousands of misled 'youfs' will line up for the obscure chance for glory or the more likely result: intense humiliation. Channel [V]'s Andrew G and James Mathison will, once again, call the shots as the drama and heartbreak unfold and if you're a Foxtel subscriber, you'll get an added bonus in the form of Australian Idol Extra, which will include behind the scenes footage from the eyes of the hosts. [V] viewers can check it out on July 17, when it premieres at 4pm. In fact, the channel will become Idol-mad with the announcement that the weekend Idol shows will appear every Sunday night at 10.30. Is that enough Idol for you? No? What are you...nuts? Okay, we'll throw in an Idol Weekend, beginning on July 17 (Sat) when you can sit back and enjoy two whole afternoons of Idol's first series; all the highlights and unforgettable (?) characters. Who will be the next Guy Sebastian or Shannon Noll or Paulini? 'That' as they say 'is in your hands'...

DISSOCIATIVES GIGS POSTPONED DUE TO THROAT INFECTION
DISSOCIATIVES GIGS POSTPONED DUE TO THROAT INFECTIONJust when Daniel Johns was fit enough to show off his new post-bulimic 6-pack, The Dissociatives singer/songwriter has been struck down by a throat infection. That means shows over the weekend have been cancelled to give the famous frontman a few days off, hopefully making a strong comeback to finish off the tour with his usual high standard performances. Apparently our quiet-spoken diva decided to 'soldier on' last night in Brisbane but couldn't deliver vocals at 100%. At least the Silverchair lynchpin has enough experience to be up-front with fans and Johns was honest, explaining his situation to the audience. The strained attempt to please the crowd in Brisbane was the last straw for Daniel's throat, which has completely shut down, making any further performances impossible until he's recovered. Dissociatives fans shouldn't panic; the show at Twin Towns has been rescheduled and refunds are available for other shows that - unfortunately - cannot be postponed. The act and their management seem genuinely disappointed, which makes sense considering this is their first headlining tour. This is what they had to say: "The Dissociatives and their management would like to sincerely apologize to everybody who has been inconvenienced by this change of plans. The decision has not been made lightly. According to medical advice Daniel's condition is typical of the common, but severe, throat infections that affect hundreds of thousands of Australians every winter. With medication and some rest it should pass very quickly and he will be able to resume live performances next week." Wow, I guess he must have caught a chill, taking off his shirt so many times recently. Didn't Mama Johns teach him anything? Make sure you check Miss Terri's Whammo Tour Page for changes and updates.

WHAMMO DIGITAL AHEAD OF SCHEDULE: HALF A MILLION TRACKS FOR DOWNLOAD!
WHAMMO DIGITAL AHEAD OF SCHEDULE: HALF A MILLION TRACKS FOR DOWNLOAD!Destra, Australia’s No. 1 Digital Rights Management (DRM) provider and - most importantly - provider of tracks for Whammo Digital, have reached the magical figure of half a million tracks ahead of schedule with the announcement that the company has signed the Orchard Music Catalogue. Orchard is the World’s Largest Distributor of Independent Music, joining the Destra catalogue alongside most major labels and Australia's biggest indie entity, Festival Mushroom Records. The announcement means Whammo Digital has hit the 500,000 track goal a few weeks before schedule. Whammo Digital, as opposed to whammo.com.au, provides international artists in addition to the full Australian catalogue. Labels are madly rushing to code their catalogues and join the revolution. In the US, Digital downloads have been convincingly out-selling CD singles; a transition that indicates what most industry spokesman have been predicting for some time.

SOPHIE FLIES COVERT MISSION TO IRAQ (YES, REALLY)
SOPHIE FLIES COVERT MISSION TO IRAQ (YES, REALLY)Sophie Monk has described her Vera Lynn-style trip to warzones in Iraq as: "one of the most amazing experiences of my life." The Australian Defence Force has revealed that Sophie, on advice from her mother, took the dangerous risk of flying to Iraq to entertain Australian troops currently stationed in the savaged region. The blonde bombshell visited many locations before shacking up in Saddam's bed. Don't worry; Saddam wasn't in it at the time. I'd imagine his current accommodation isn't quite as plush as his old palace where chandeliers and marble adorn the old luxury residence, now named 'Camp Victory'. Sophie's official website posted this statement: 'As many of you know, Sophie has been over in Iraq performing for the Australian troops. She is now back home and happy, as it's been an amazing experience. She performed at every base and brought some much needed positive relief for our hard-working troops. She signed heaps of autographs and everyone had a fantastic time. Our best wishes go out to those working in Iraq.' Merrick and Rosso's Nova 969 Breakfast Show got the scoop when Sophie chatted to the comedy duo, saying "You could see where the bridge had been bombed. The kitchen had been kicked in." Her praise of the troops would have buoyed the confidence of the Defence Force's PR team: "They're all so down to earth and none of them whinge. They were just absolutely amazing." I wonder if they make camo fatigue bikinis in Sophie's size?

OILS LEGEND RECRUITED BY LABOR PARTY LEADER
OILS LEGEND RECRUITED BY LABOR PARTY LEADERWhen Peter Garrett decided to leave Midnight Oil, many fans suspected that the enigmatic frontman and environmental activist would seek a role in national politics. Considering Garrett had always balanced his political responsibilities with his commitments to the band, a dramatic shift in ambitions seemed like the obvious cause for the band's demise. Now those suspicions have become a reality, with Mark Latham, leader of the Australian Labor Party, inviting Garrett to run for preselection for the seat of Kingsford Smith. While the announcement was no surprise, the media and public have greeted the announcement enthusiastically and although Garrett's decision will necessitate more than a few compromises, the Labor Party and its members seem excited about the inclusion of their charismatic new member. In fact, Mark Latham has already conceded that his new recruit will almost certainly become a significant force in parliament. Here's what Latham and Garrett had to say about the announcement in an interview posted on the Labor Party's website:

LATHAM: I am especially delighted that Peter Garrett has accepted my invitation to join the Australian Labor Party and to run for preselection for the seat of Kingsford Smith. Peter Garrett is someone who's got a lot to offer our political system, someone who's got a lot to offer the national Parliament. He has had a lifelong commitment to progressive causes. He is well known to several generations of Australians who have enjoyed the music and energy of Midnight Oil and the important social causes that they raised. He is well known as an environmental activist, as someone who is deeply committed to indigenous Australians, someone who is deeply committed to social justice and ensuring that the Australian people have better services.

GARRETT: Today, I've nailed my colours to the mast. It's an important day for me, for Labor and I hope for the country. It was difficult for me to make this decision; I'll be really straight about it: politics is an imperfect game. We all know that. We see it on our television stations every night. And yet it is the best game we have for making the country work better. I could've thought about the Greens, I could've stayed as President of the ACF but I do want to make a national contribution for the life of the nation and the only way that I could see that I could do that effectively was by joining the Labor Party and I'm humbled that the invitation was given to me and I just want do my best.

The most significant compromise Garrett has made is his position on the American Pine Gap facility in the heart of the desert; a contentious and secretive base that once attracted the ire of the infamous performer. Now, Garret is willing to recognise Pine Gap's role in the fight against terrorism, a threat he now admits has replaced nuclear armament as the country's most obvious threat to national security. But Garrett, expecting a grilling from the press, seemed to have all the answers and his experience as a public speaker came to the fore during his first exchange with journalists. He also had to deflect criticism after finding out that he was not on any electoral role, an embarrassing early blemish on his new career in politics. Hopefully the week's events will quell the angry reaction of Oils fans who found it difficult to understand why Garrett decided to leave the popular act.

POWDERFINGER AND LIVING END DOMINATE THE FIRST JACK AWARDS
POWDERFINGER AND LIVING END DOMINATE THE FIRST JACK AWARDS80,000 punters voted for their favourite live performers in the lead-up to the inaugural 'Jack Awards', which culminated in one of the most irreverent awards ceremonies ever held in this country. The stars and industry schmoozers arrived in droves at Angel Place in Sydney to party at the expense of sponsors Jack Daniels and watch their peers gain rare recognition for live performances; a traditional strength of Australian acts. By the time the 800 guests shuffled into the City Recital Hall, spirits were high and Dallas Crane maintained the vibes with an impressive rendition of their new single, Dirty Hearts, instantly proving why Australian acts are dominating stages around the world. The evening's host, Jabba from Channel V, took to the stage and set the tone of the evening with some scathing but hilarious banter. Then it was time to present the first Jack Award for 'Best Bass Player' and Jabba used the opportunity to announce the comeback of one of Sydney's most ridiculous rock acts, Smoking Kills, calling to the stage...yours truly! Yes, your fearless Whammo Editor (and Smoking Kills bass player) became the first person to present a Jack Award, a great honour and excellent opportunity for shameless self-promotion. But it was that kind of night, a relaxed and comical affair that gave the industry a chance to showcase live music and reward the acts, photographers, promoters, venues and media that have orchestrated live music's impressive comeback over the last 12 months. Kudos must be given to the Brag team, who put on a great show and created an atmosphere that challenged the usual stifled nature of awards ceremonies. The big winners were Powderfinger (Best Live Band, Best Live TV Appearance, Best Drummer) and The Living End (Best Bass player, Best Guitarist) while a long list of nominees were recognised, including The Sleepy Jackson, Magic Dirt, Little Birdy, Jet, The Mess Hall, John Butler Trio and The Superjesus. Ken West, promoter of the Big Day Out, Australia's infamous travelling festival, accepted the 'Gentleman Jack Award' for his services to the live music industry. Blistering performances by You Am I and Tex Perkins' Dark Horses kept the audience enthralled but the highlight of the evening's performances was the all-star jam that ended the ceremony; an impressive version of Star Hotel courtesy of Sarah McLeod (Superjesus), Chris Joannau (Silverchair), Jon Coghill (Powderfinger), Malcolm Clark and Luke Steele (The Sleepy Jackson). The star-studded line-up, aptly named "Superfinger Sleepychair" provided a fitting climax to the festivities. Then, of course, there were more opportunities to party until the wee hours of the morning...but that's another story.

The Winners:

Best Live Band: Powderfinger (presented by Ken West)
Best Male Performer: John Butler (presented by Chloe Maxwell)
Best Female Performer: Sarah McLeod (The Superjesus) (presented by Merrick Watts)
Best Lead Guitarist: Chris Cheney (The Living End) - presented by Andrew G and James Mathison

VIC - The Esplanade Hotel, St Kilda; QLD - The Zoo, Fortitude Valley; SA - UniBar, Adelaide;
NT - Nirvana, Darwin; ACT - The Green Room; WA - Amplifier Bar, Perth

Best Tour Art - Big Day Out Festival, 2003 (James Bellisini) - presented by Reg Mombassa
Best Live Rock Photography - Christopher Morris - presented by Kathy McCabe (Daily Telegraph) and Adam Zammit (The Brag & Peer Group Media)

For Aussies who love their live music, make sure you check out the broadcast of the first Jack Awards on Channel [V], premiering on Sunday June 20 at 8:30pm. The Jack Awards will be back in 2005.

GURUS FORCED TO POSTPONE VIC DATES
GURUS FORCED TO POSTPONE VIC DATESThere's a nasty lurgy hanging about the Hoodoo Gurus crew like a persistent groupie, and Dave Faulkner has fallen prey to the illness, resulting in a severe viral chest infection. It's upsetting for Victorian fans who will temporarily miss out on the bumper line-up on offer as the Gurus tour their Mach Schau album. The Gurus, Spiderbait and Peabody have been packing venues across the country over the last six weeks but people with tickets for gigs at The palace, Inferno, The Brass and Sodens Hotel, will have to wait. Here's the current list of rescheduled gigs: The Palace gig has been re-booked for Friday June 18, Inferno Traralgon shifts to Thursday June 17 and the Sodens Hotel in Albury will now take place on Tuesday June 15. Further re-scheduled dates will be announced asap. Anyone requiring a refund should contact the point of ticket purchase. So far, the band are confident that all NSW dates will continue as planned. It takes a hell of a lot to stop the Gurus, who have only cancelled gigs on three occasions during their 18 year career. The band has promised to make it up to fans with some blistering sets at the rescheduled shows. To check the revised tour schedule, click here. To read a review of Mach Schau, click here. JBT MAKES HISTORY WITH APRA GLORY
JBT MAKES HISTORY WITH APRA GLORYIt's a sign of the times: the John Butler Trio, after gaining the rare distinction of taking the #1 chart position with the independently released Sunrise Over Sea album, has now become the first indie act to win the prestigious APRA 'Song Of The Year' award, for Zebra. Butler was no sure thing, considering the competition - Delta Goodrem, Jet and Silverchair - but his dream year continued and it seems everything Butler touches turns platinum...literally. Sunrise Over Sea officially gained double platinum status on the very same day that John received his 'song of the year' award. A bunch of dates of the current JBT tour have already sold out, including gigs at Toowoomba, Nambour and the Gold Coast, so make sure you book now. A dollar from each ticket sold goes to the Refugee Action Coalition. To check out the full list of dates, click here. To read a review of Sunrise Over Sea, click here.

INTERCOOLER ANNOUNCE DEPARTURE OF GUITARIST
INTERCOOLER ANNOUNCE DEPARTURE OF GUITARISTIt's been a mixed week for Brisbane's rising stars, Intercooler, with the announcement that long-time friend and guitarist, Michael Caso, has left the band. The news was announced as the band prepared to record a new single with producer Paul 'Woody' Annison (Rocket Science, The Living End, 28 Days). The departure of Caso was described by the band as "hard but amicable" and the reason for the decision won't surprise any touring musician: "With Intercooler's touring schedule getting more demanding Michael was finding it increasingly difficult to balance rock 'n' roll with other things going on in his life. He ultimately had to make a choice and the band supports him in his decision to leave." Darek Mudge, who was touring overseas with Screamfeeder, instantly made himself available to fill the position and after initial rehearsals the new line-up is gelling well; just in time to record at Rockinghorse Studios at Byron Bay and embark on a national tour. Intercooler fans can expect the new single to be released during July/August. Anyone who wants to check out the chops on the new kid, can shuffle down to The Zoo on Friday, June 11 for the debut performance of Intercooler's new line-up.

JET HIT #1 BUT CANCEL NATIONAL TOUR DATES
JET HIT #1 BUT CANCEL NATIONAL TOUR DATESIt's been a week of ups and downs for Aussie rockers Jet. While Get Born hit the coveted top position on the Australian album charts (their first #1 anywhere in the world), the lads have been forced to cancel the remaining gigs on their national tour due to a "serious family illness". Adelaide and Perth will be temporarily deprived of their Jet fix and considering the success of the east coast dates, including 3 sold-out shows in Sydney, fans will be bitterly disappointed. But an official statement from the band suggested the lads were willing to make it up to their South and Western Australian fans: "It is with great regret and disappointment that Jet announce the cancellation of the final leg of their current Australian tour. Shows scheduled for Adelaide, Dunsborough, Perth and Fremantle will no longer take place as planned due to a serious family illness. The band sincerely apologises for any disappointment caused by this unexpected turn of events. Jet fans have been out in force on ‘Thee Get Well Gone Revue’ and the band intend to repay the support by making up these shows at a later date. Jet aim to tour Australia again sometime later this year and plan to reschedule shows in Adelaide and Perth." If you've bought tickets to the cancelled shows, you can receive refunds from the point of purchase. Overseas fans (who are probably holding their breath right now) will soon find out if the London Brixton Academy show or festival dates will go ahead as planned.

AREA 7 RETURN WITH BIG ISSUE
AREA 7 RETURN WITH BIG ISSUEAustralia's ska legends, Area 7 release their new single Big Issue this week. The boys may have been missing from our radars in recent times but that certainly doesn't mean that they haven't been busy. Before self-exiling themselves in the studio to lay down fresh tracks, the former Aria nominees travelled to East Timor to entertain Australian troops stationed there. In truth, there aren't many achievements left on Area 7's 'things to do' list, considering the band has continually invaded the Australian charts with catchy singles and their Top 10 album, Bitter And Twisted, which sold in excess of 50,000 copies. It's no wonder Area 7 are widely recognised as the pioneers of Australia's ska scene. Get ready for more Area 7 chart action as the Big Issue single finds its way onto national radio playlists and the socially conscious video appears on Aussie televisions. The film clip features Big Issue magazine's famous street vendors as talent. The lads have always tried to deliver special treats to their fans and Big Issue is no exception, featuring the fresh B-side Don't Talk To Me and multi-media component.

THROAT SURGERY SIDELINES CASANOVAS FRONTMAN
THROAT SURGERY SIDELINES CASANOVAS FRONTMANFor the second time this year, a major Australian release has been marred by misfortune. The first unfortunate hurdle was the frightening fall of Rocket Science's Roman Tucker, who was in a coma on the eve of their single release, Sex Call. Luckily, Roman is now recovering from the incident. Now, The Casanovas' Tommy Boyce has been sidelined due to throat surgery as the celebrated rockers release their debut self-titled album. It must be very disappointing for the act, who planned to perform at album launches in Melbourne and Sydney. There have been high hopes that the Melbourne three-piece will still be able to kick-start their national tour in May and it looks as though a speedy recovery is expected, with Rubber Records informing us today of Tommy's commitment to play one song on The Footy Show in Melbourne this Thursday. Apparently Tommy just needs a couple of weeks to fully heal and he'll be ready for the tour. Casanovas fans can breathe a sigh of relief. To check out The Casanovas' tour dates, click here. REGURGITATOR COMPOSE MUSIC FOR NEW ATARI GAME
REGURGITATOR COMPOSE MUSIC FOR NEW ATARI GAMERegurgitator's obsession with video games has resulted in old-school game imagery appearing in their video clips and cover art, but you'd have to think that the boys have finally hit the peak of their preoccupation, with Atari announcing that the Brisbane 3-piece have written music for the new Playstation 2 game, Transformers. The video-clip for the theme song will hit screens this week and Quan Yeomans has composed the music that players will hear as they battle Cyclonus in the Deep Amazon Level. Quan had this to say: "When I saw the names ‘Atari’ and ‘Transformers’ put that close together I just knew I had to be involved.” Modern games always offer a reward for the inquisitive players and Transformers is no different; if players locate the correct 'Datacon', they'll reveal a hidden bonus remix of the theme song. The relationship between local games producers and musicians is a major pioneering breakthrough for the local scene. Let's hope this starts a trend in Australian interactive entertainment.
