SOUNDTRACKS
Soundtracks ImagePaul Kelly has written the soundtrack of the year. The 16th Annual ARIA Awards were a highly competitive affair with most catagories being fought out by strong competition but Kelly continued Lantana's run of awards by adding an Aria to the list. He also scored the award for Best Adult Contemporary Album adding more critical acclaim to the already popular Nothing But A Dream. For a full run-down of last night's event click here.

In film circles the movie of the month is The Tracker starring David Gulpilil; Australia’s finest Aboriginal acting talent. The soundtrack to the film features the voice of Archie Roach, possibly the most highly regarded indigenous vocal talent in this country. The Tracker’s producers had struggled with the soundtrack until they decided on Roach who’s distinctive voice added the necessary final piece to the puzzle. Rolf de Heer (Bad Boy Bubby), the film’s director penned the lyrics for the songs, based on the film’s script. The music, composed by Graham Tardif, is unashamedly country and western, inspired by the Buried Country compilation.

It's fitting that Machine Gun Fellatio scored the gig to provide songs for the soundtrack of Gettin Square, like MGF, the film is very Australian and very...well, insane; a truly modern take on the Australian attitude in all it's ironic glory. A couple of international acts - Groove Armada, Ian Dury and Faithless - are well placed alongside the Aussies: MGF, Rocket Science, Nick Cave, The Vines and The Saints. All acts fit the mood of the film: another gritty and amusing take on Australian crime. The film is charming Australian audiences in much the same way as MGF did when they ascended through the ranks of quirky Oz acts to become a mainstream entity in 2002. Rocket Science's Being Followed is still one of my favourite tracks (after hearing it about 3,000 times) and as for The Saints' I'm Stranded, what Aussie can't be proud when they hear that particular classic? It's a part of our culture; one that reminds us that punk didn't originate in the UK, it was born in brown city of Brisbane. If the star-studded line-up wasn't impressive enough, MGF have also composed a couple of fresh tunes for the film, giving this strong soundtrack a unique flavour.

This brand new soundtrack – volume 3 in the series – follows countless enquiries at Whammo. Secret Life of Us fans are wonderfully obsessed with the gripping tele-drama that follows the lives of a young group of friends in Melbourne’s inner city. It would be difficult to find more loyal fans of any tv show and it’s not surprising when you look at the quality Australian artists the series is able to attract, many recording exclusively for this release. Abby Dobson (Leonardos Bride / paulmac), Pinky Beecroft (Machine Gun Fellatio), The Calculators with Adalita (Magic Dirt), Lazy Susan, The Tulips (Caroline Kennedy, formerly of The Plums and Deadstar), Origene and Dean Manning (Leonardos Bride) have all recorded unique tracks for this album and Eskimo Joe, Kylie Minogue and Waikiki add ‘non-album’ tracks to the mix. As The Secret Life Of Us goes from strength to strength, the soundtrack’s quality matches the snowballing popularity of Australia’s favourite weekly treat.

I don't think I've been deeply effected by soundtrack music since the heady old days of Angelo Badalamenti's work with David Lynch. The Walking on Water soundtrack has suddenly pickled me in a similar way. Antony Partos has created a sadly beautiful world with this collection of melodic fragments and maturely arranged trophy pieces, which include two traditional vocal tracks with Sarah McGregor on vocals. I haven't seen the film, featuring Vince Colosimo, but the fact that this collection of music stands alone must be a subtle compliment.

Alex Proyas’ film has generated mixed reviews but the soundtrack is guaranteed fun. The D4 are the garage rock-flavour of the month and they open proceedings with a gritty version of ACDC’s High Voltage. From that point things get a little random, hardly being themic but more of a cross-section of someone’s personal record collection, spanning several genres and five decades. What do The Jam’s That’s Entertainment and 28 Days' Say What have in common: absolutely nothing except the fact they’re great songs. David McCormack is in more places than God at the moment and he joins forces with Andrew Lancaster to add some original input like the self-titled theme with vocals by Katie Noonan. It’s a strange journey over the course of this album but somehow the retro, originals and bizarre covers gel to form an entertaining selection of tunes.

The makers of The Tracker needed a voice that transmited the beautiful yet haunting atmospheres of the Australain outback. Only Archie Roach could successfully capture that essence and, combined with on-screen legend David Gulpilil, Archie adds a certain credibility to this tense tale of clashing cultures.
