WHAMMO 2003 CHARTS!
WHAMMO'S 2003 CHARTS

I keep hearing that music is in trouble. 2003 has been a year of whingeing and whining among industry folks. Everybody's worked themselves into a lather over illegal downloads but one question remains: why is there so much good music being released? Personally, sitting here as CDs land on my desk, I've never experienced a more rich and diverse array of fresh releases. New stars are emerging, older names have made impressive comebacks and I've never seen this many releases by Aussie artists in a single year.

The following charts have been chosen by you, the Whammo family, through CD sales over 2003. These charts have integrity. I'd like to thank you all for being very supportive of new talent over the year. The least I can do is help you dig for gems, so I've added short descriptions of acts in the 'album' categories for each genre. You'll find general charts for the top sellers and more detailed, genre-specific charts for the purists. Remember to contact me - glenn@whammo.com.au - if you'd like some advice or more information. We're here to help.

TOP 10 ROCK ALBUMS

1.....POWDERFINGER VULTURE STREET
Powderfinger's last 3 albums have all won the coveted Aria Award for 'Best Album'. No other Australian act has that distinction. The Brisbane 5 piece is the most popular Australian rock act of the last decade and with Vulture Street they harnessed the globe's new-found enthusiasm for rock by presenting a harder, raw-edged sound and ignoring the epic love songs that made them a mainstream entity. This is a mammoth and uncompromising album of integrity that reminds us of the grit so common on classic albums of the 70 s.
2.....THE LIVING END MODERN ARTILLERY
Already superstars in their homeland, The Living End have the perfect set of tunes to captivate their growing global audience. Few bands can perform with velocity and intensity of this trio. If we thought previous efforts were punctuated with clever dynamics, Modern Artillery displays the gifted songwriting of Chris Cheney with the crispest production possible. If The Jam were the last great 'singles band' The Living End are likely to be the next.
3.....YOU AM I BEST OF - THE CREAM AND THE CROCK
This album is an absolute must for fans wishing to recall the pop/rock sensibilities of the 60s. Tim Rogers is a master songwriter and deserves his place beside gurus like Paul Kelly as a genius songsmith. This is an act that had their time in the spotlight, debuting at the top of the Australian charts. Now it seems that the rest of the world is warming to their sound. It's about time.
4.....THE PERSIAN RUGS TURKISH DELIGHT
The popularity of the Hoodoo Gurus never ceases to surprise us here at Whammo. The moment we informed subscribers of the band's new incarnation as a 60s garage/punk combo, the diehards were bombing our inboxes with enquiries and busily voting with dollars to force this debut into Whammo's 2003 Top 10. It's an unadulterated keyboard-powered rock album that inspires visions of deranged Go Go Dancers and V8 hot-rods.
5.....JEBEDIAH GLEESIDES & SPARITIES
Perth's pioneering indie rockers have a desperately passionate fanbase and the importance of their sound becomes clearer as young Perth bands begin to emerge with a definite Jebediah-influenced sound. This collection of covers and rarities is a comprehensive overview of the band's lighter moments.
6.....BODYJAR JARCHIVES - 10 YEARS OF BODYJAR
10 Years? Is it possible? When you take a quick look at the tracklisting it's obvious that Bodyjar's punk harmonies are part of everyone's musical psyche. No one attacks their microphones with such ear-splitting intensity and their constant barrage of hit singles has always found a home on Australian radio. This is an impressive overview of an impressive career.
7.....COLD CHISEL RINGSIDE
Every Australian in the 80s assumed Cold Chisel would become international mega-stars but it wasn't to be. Despite the disappointment and subsequent split, the Australian institution that is Cold Chisel impressed enough overseas music lovers to leave an indelible mark; especially in the USA and Canada where word of mouth praise has made this 5 piece a cult phenomenon. Inspired by the recent Ringside concerts, the new live album not only spans their long and infamous career, it also features the first song the band have recorded in the last 5 years.
8.....SILVERCHAIR LIVE FROM FARAWAY STABLES
The Chair suffered a tough year in 2002. The highly publicised woes of Daniel Johns set the scene for a great comeback and Newcastle’s most famous export were finally able to shake off the negativity to launch a triumphant world tour. This double CD/DVD package is the fruit of that particular labour. Only one question remains: where do they go after the brilliant but demented experiment of Diorama?
9.....THE SUPERJESUS ROCK MUSIC
After losing a guitarist when Tim formed The Androids, The Superjesus decided to remain a trio. Their first single from Rock Music, Stick Together was a symbolic offering and a renewed unity among remaining members delivered a surprisingly fat-sounding LP of the quality we've come to expect from Adelaide's premier rock combo.
10....JET GET BORN
After almost being swallowed by their own hype, Jet lived up to expectations with a slick slab of melodic ballads and ball-tearing rock. The support of the UK music press can sometimes be a curse but these levelheaded lads have converted cynics with their renowned live performances and impressed industry folks with a tour schedule that - on paper - looks unachievable.

TOP 10 ALTERNATIVE SINGLES

1.....THE CHURCH SONG IN SPACE
2.....SOMETHING FOR KATE DEJA VU
3.....THE WHITLAMS ROYAL IN THE AFTERNOON
4.....NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS HE WANTS YOU/BABE I'M ON FIRE
5.....SLEEPY JACKSON VAMPIRE RACECOURSE
6.....THE GO BETWEENS CAROLINE & I
7.....SOMETHING FOR KATE SONG FOR A SLEEPWALKER
8.....AUGIE MARCH LITTLE WONDER
9.....THE GIVEGOODS I WANT TO KILL A RICH MAN
10....GEORGE STILL REAL

TOP 10 ALTERNATIVE ALBUMS

1.....SOMETHING FOR KATE THE OFFICIAL FICTION
Somehow this act maintains integrity while shooting directly to the top of the Aria album charts. A DIY approach to artwork and respectful love of their fans has helped Paul Dempsey and co to keep a stranglehold on their art. With an imminent release in other territories, Something For Kate are sure to repeat their success in the US.
2.....THE CHURCH FORGET YOURSELF
After 23 years you don't expect bands to be releasing their most edgy and experimental music, but The Church have never been interested in patterns and trends. They've slowly regained complete control of the creative process and with 4 talented songwriters colliding in the studio; the results are always worthy of attention. Forget Yourself contradicts the ultra-sweet production that have always been a trademark of their psychedelic offerings. The finished product is their most human offering while still shocking the listener with unrivalled intimacy.
3.....STEVE KILBEY FREAKY CONCLUSIONS
One of the reasons The Church have remained together for more than two decades is their ability to exercise their musical demons through constant solo projects and collaborations. Steve told me that he could write an album in one week and on Freaky Conclusions he plums the depths of his prolific back-log to reveal forgotten gems.
4.....GERLING BADBLOOD!!!
This band gets more freakish and brilliant with each offering. After building their own studio the trio had the time and freedom to create an understated masterpiece of punk/electronic fusion and the shocking hybrid finally achieves the sinister element the band have been developing over the last few years. See this band live and know what it means to be possessed by music.
5.....BLACKEYED SUSANS SHANGRI-LA
It takes a serious effort to achieve true beauty and darkness under the Australian sun but Blackeyed Susans have become fine exponents of thoughtful guitar music. Shangri-La is an example of what we lose when we allow digital recording methods to dominate music. It's analogue warmth, combined with intelligence and atmosphere, provides a solid reason for the longevity and popularity of this Melbourne act.
6.....THE SLEEPY JACKSON LOVERS
While Australian rockers lead the global renaissance, Luke Steele's bizarre brand of country/art rock has captivated the demanding UK press and - more recently - been named in American Rolling Stone's Top 50 Albums For 2003. In our opinion it is the finest album released this year. As band-mate Malcolm said in a recent interview: "Luke is influenced by everyone, but doesn't sound like anyone". Finally, we've discovered a truly eccentric genius within the Australian music industry.
7.....THE GIVEGOODS I WANT TO KILL A RICH MAN
What happens when you combine members of Smudge, Whopping Big Naughty, The Lemonheads, Waikiki and Something For Kate? A bloody brilliant album, that's what. The songwriting is the impressive feature of The Givegoods debut and laconic cynicism and a dry sense of humour collide head-on to achieve a truly unique take on indie pop/rock.
8.....GELBISON 1704
Produced by Ian Ball, it's fair to say that his influence is obvious. What's also obvious is a special musical relationship among the members of Gelbison and an ability to compose dreamy tunes that successfully provide escapism. With guests like Ben Lee and Luke Steele, this debut LP is rich in sounds, instruments and atmosphere.
9.....NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS NOCTURAMA
As the last offering that includes the demented guitars of Blixa Bargeld, Nocturama marks the end of an era, but if Nick Cave's recent performances are any indication, it may simply be the beginning of another.
10....BLUEBOTTLE KISS COME ACROSS
The stories of Jamie Hutchings have progressed from inner-visions to insightful narratives and the dark imagery is perfectly framed by musicians that have developed an inert understanding over a long and turbulent career. Hutchings could be one of the only frontmen capable of producing his own work. If you don't like using your brain, don't bother trying to understand this LP.

TOP 10 POP SINGLES

1.....KYLIE MINOGUE SLOW
2.....DARREN HAYES I MISS YOU
3.....DANNII MINOGUE I BEGIN TO WONDER
4.....AMIEL LOVESONG
5.....DANNII MINOGUE DON'T WANNA LOSE THIS FEELING
6.....DELTA GOODREM NOT ME, NOT I
7.....DAVID CAMPBELL HOPE
8.....EMMANUEL CARELLA 2 BEAUTIFUL
9.....AMIEL OBSESSION (I LOVE YOU)
10....DELTA GOODREM LOST WITHOUT YOU

TOP 10 POP ALBUMS

1.....KYLIE MINOGUE BODY LANGUAGE
A courageous departure from the formula of Fever has done nothing to deter the obsessive fan base of the world's premier diva. Body Language shows that Ms Minogue is willing to heed the changing tastes of fans. This time it's R&B; and electro that gets the Minogue treatment. The results have earned Kylie a new army of disciples.
2.....DELTA GOODREM INNOCENT EYES
Hodgkin’s Disease has sidelined Australia's most successful debutante but her album has continued on its own journey into record books and most Australian homes. Her swag of Aria Awards was predictable but the inevitability of a clean sweep at the awards ceremony shouldn't take the sheen from an amazing achievement.
3.....KYLIE MINOGUE KYLIE: GREATEST HITS 87 - 99
It would be risky for any other artist to release a new studio album and greatest hits package in the same week but Kylie's popularity allows for a continual bombardment of the market. With each set of fresh tracks she manages to capture the love and imagination of a new generation of pop fans. Many artists survive their formative years to release hits albums but how many of them could boast the amount of chart-toppers delivered over the last decade by Australia's greatest export?
4.....AMIEL AUDIO OUT
As a teen she became one of the most recognisable voices in the world as Josh Abraham's Addicted To Bass elevated Drum&Bass; from underground clubs to mainstream charts. Amiel has carefully honed her songwriting skills - evident from the popularity of Lovesong - and her credible background makes her one of the few pop artists in Australia to actually earn the respect of the industry.
5.....SOPHIE MONK CALENDAR GIRL
Sophie joins the Minogue sisters as an unadulterated sex symbol but few objects of desire have ever been this 'down to earth' or possessed such a self-deprecating sense of humour. The ex-Bardot vocalist has an innate sense of self-promotion that has kept her face, name and body in the limelight while the operatic garnishes on her LP surprised cynics and proved that the Queensland diva has 'paid her dues' as a singer.
6.....DANNII MINOGUE NEON NIGHTS
The outspoken junior Minogue seems more comfortable with Kylie's fame and a more relaxed approach to her music has paid dividends. Her club-powered hits are gaining attention in the US and Dannii appears to be revelling in the limelight. The fact that Dannii was a star before her sister made a break-through is becoming more believable with each release.
7.....ABI TUCKER DREAMWORLD
Her exposure through the phenomenal success of the hit Australian TV series, The Secret Life Of Us, may have gained Abi a few fans, but in the long run it's also detracted from her career as a singer. In reality, Tucker has a string of releases and a serious approach to music that may suffer from her dual career.
8.....RACHAEL KANE APPETITE
The empowering music of Rachael Kane was destined to make an impact. As opposed to the majority of acts listed in this pop chart, Rachael considers songwriting to be her first priority and honest lyrical content combined with a distinctive voice makes Appetite one 2003's finest debuts.
9.....SANDRINE TRIGGER
Sandrine pours emotion into song and along with new artists like Rachael Kane and Amiel, this talented solo artist doesn't mind unnerving her audience; as long as she projects bare and exposed sentiment. Trigger shows courageous lyrical content, delivered with a crystal-clear voice that we'll all be hearing for a long time to come.
10....BEC CARTWRIGHT BEC CARTWRIGHT
Bec's popularity as a television star supported her desire to make the transition to music. Initial singles raced into the charts and if it wasn't for the constant flow of soap-powered stars, her LP may have gained more notoriety.

TOP 10 DANCE/HIP-HOP/ELECTRONIC ALBUMS

1.....THE HERD AN ELEFANT NEVER FORGETS
Sydney's finest beat collective are going from strength to strength with a DIY approach that allows members a unique creative freedom. The result is an eclectic mix of breaks and hip-hop that manages to capture the essence of young urban Australians without being overly colloquial. Political criticisms and cultural observations garnish fat beats to arrive at a humorous, diverse and musically rich collection of tracks.
2.....ENDORPHIN SEDUCTION
Eric Chapus is a spiritual soul who communicates nature through electronics. Seduction may signal recognition of club culture but Endorphin's ability to create atmosphere remains untouched. While swinging between sub-genres, a decade of experience in electronic production has created a distinctive sound marks every track as unmistakeably Endorphin.
3.....WICKED BEAT SOUND SYSTEM NEW SOUL BREAKS (REMIX DISK)
An easy flow and double-edged vocal attack have given WBSS a universal appeal that transcends generational gaps. Linda Janssen is a languid diva who adds extra melody to XL-beats while Kye chimes in with ragga-styled flavours on more upbeat tracks. While rarely making forays into higher-energy tunes, WBSS never fail to captivate with unrivalled production and carefully crafted rhythms.
4.....SALMONELLA DUB ONE DROP EAST
The Kiwis love their dub and this act represents the genre with a modern twist that finds them fusing house, funk and drum&bass; on their most recent laid-back effort. In danger of becoming drum&bass; mega-stars through Outside The Dubplates (the best remix album of all time!), the experienced combo produced a collection of subdued and epic tunes which reversed time and recognised their roots. One Drop East is clear proof that Salmonella Dub have complete creative control and aren't afraid to change formulas.
5.....B(IF)TEK FREQUENCIES WILL MOVE TOGETHER
This electro-edged duo are veterans of Australia's underground electronic scene. They are one of the few acts to make an impression on national radio playlists and in terms of integrity, this act is untouchable. Unfortunately I've never heard this album so hit their site for more details.
6.....NIGHTSWIMMER AND A CRESCENT HALF LIT THE SKY
It's hard to know where to place Nightswimmer when ascertaining an appropriate genre. And A Crescent... is a true fusion of post rock and electronica that successfully invites the listener into the realm of escapism.
7.....ILLPICKL RATED G
Mike Wright's posthumous LP represents a huge sigh of relief for those that knew this talented pioneer of house/breaks fusion. Rated G gives us all a memento of sweaty nights filled with fat bass and uplifting beats. In truth, few people who danced in Sydney's clubs during the late 90s were untouched by his love for funk. That ability to produce grooves makes this set of originals, collaborations and remixes timeless.
8.....TELEMETRY ORCHESTRA CHILDREN STAY FREE
With a Kraftwerk-style approach to analogue sounds Telemetry Orchestra have mastered the restrained beauty of cold electronic compositions with the added bonus of endearing vocals. They may seem a little nerd-like but it only adds to a very human and entertaining live show.
9.....ENTROPIC BRAILLE
Entropic are the impostors in this chart. Unlike other acts in this chart, this unique combo create electronic sounds with traditional instruments, convincingly producing dancefloor-savy beats and grooves without the assistance of drum machines, groove boxes and racks. Check out the remix album Rendezvous to hear the results of truly digital tweaks.
10....RESIN DOGS HI FIDELITY DIRT
This is the funk party album of the year but Brisbane's finest hip-hop/funk combo always seem to find difficulty in matching the intensity of their renowned live performance. Hi Fidelity Dirt is a step in the right direction with its forays into ragga, dub, 70-s styled funk and hip-hop. It's an under-rated effort that features fine international stars on vocals including Pharcyde and Abstrakt Rude.

TOP 10 COUNTRY/BLUES/ROOTS ALBUMS

1.....TEX PERKINS SWEET NOTHING
Recent shows by The Beast Of Bourbon proved that Tex is still capable of fierce intensity, but Sweet Nothing finds the enigmatic performer in rural mode, feeding off blissful surroundings to arrive at a subdued but powerful sound with his talented band, the Dark Horses. Tex describes the album's inspiration as 'the life force of attraction between living things' and the popularity of this LP proves that music lovers still find Tex's brand of country-flavoured acoustics to be highly attractive.
2.....JOHN BUTLER TRIO LIVING 2001 - 2002
Australia's highest-profile blues artist and his accomplished band communicate scathing political commentary through exact musicianship and insightful lyrics. As a live entity this trio are unequalled and this collection of live recordings clearly demonstrates the power of their performances.
3.....SLIM DUSTY THE VERY BEST OF SLIM DUSTY
We'll always miss the late Slim Dusty: his familiar hits, his fatherly support of rising stars and his charismatic persona. The only thing that can possibly ease the loss of this fine Australian is the musical legacy he left behind. A life of prolific musical creation was punctuated by countless achievements. This popular 'Best Of' Collection provides a quality overview of an amazing talent.
4.....LISA MILLER VERSION ORIGINALE
Our finest female solo artist follows the critical acclaim of previous efforts with another fresh batch of fine compositions, produced by the current master of Australian studios, Shane O'Mara. Lisa's sparse use of instruments allows her honest lyrics to shine and few solo artists can rival the emotion she generates.
5.....MELINDA SCHNEIDER HAPPY TEARS
Australian country's 'Female Vocalist Of The Year' (CMAAs) started her career when she joined her mother, yodeller Mary Schneider, at the age of 3. The tradition lives on with Happy Tears and her new effort, Kitchen Tapes, adding to the notion that this duel Golden Guitar winner will soon attract a similar international reputation as her famous mum.
6.....MATT WALKER NAVIGATIONAL SKILLS
Matt Walker is one of the 'buzz' blues singer/guitarist/songwriters emerging as the genre enjoys a renewed popularity. He captures the concept of urban blues perfectly and his popularity as a collaborator finds him working with luminaries, adding new influences and flavours to each fresh LP. Navigational Skills is his finest and most honestly introspective album yet.
7.....JOHN WILLIAMSON TRUE BLUE TWO
Australian country artists still look to the USA for inspiration but John Williamson, like Slim Dusty, is a champion of an individually Australian sound. Subject matter, accent and sense of humour all suggest national pride, evident during his stirrings renditions of Waltzing Matilda at international rugby fixtures as John inspired passionate choruses among massive crowds.
8.....THE RECTIFIERS WEAR THE WEIGHT OF THE RESTING SKY
Distinctive country-flavoured lyrical content is beautifully communicated with a cut'n'paste extravaganza of complex arrangements that took 3 years to record, edit and mix. This is by far the most beautiful album of 2003.
9.....DEAD RINGER BAND THE VERY BEST OF, SO FAR
The Chambers family features a famous pioneering guitarist, accomplished producer and, of course, Kasey - the queen of modern Australian country music. The Dead Ringer Band not only sings about rural Australia, they've lived it, surviving in harsh conditions to finally emerge as the genre's most famous family unit.
10....BECCY COLE LITTLE VICTORIES
She's an amazing vocal talent who was rewarded with two consecutive Golden Globe awards for 'Best Female Vocalist' but the future promises to offer much more for Beccy Cole fans. By working with established stars like Gina Jeffreys, Rod McCormack and Marie Wilson, Beccy is honing her talents as a songwriter. Rod McCormack's production presents this young talent with crystal-clear clarity.
