KATH & KIM'S PARTY TAPE

It's always the same: I roll up to the office on a Monday morning and a pile of CDs await. Usually it's a sad bunch of wannabes, meekly making timid attempts to attract my attention. But not today. ‘The Joker’ was in the pack; the one CD that demanded my attention, ordering: "Look at moy, look at moy, look at moy". That's right, it was Kath & Kim's Party Tape; the musical version of the hit TV series that overcomes cultural cringe to celebrate suburban Australia. Who would possibly put The Tubes on the same mix as Diana Ross; or match Status Quo with The Supremes? It's absolute lunacy but a welcome addition to my sane collection. K&K;'s Party Tape also features some wise words of wisdom from the femme fatales made famous by the show: the usual combination of wisdom, g-ups and Aussie-centric commentary. Kath can't seem to keep her mind of sex, as you'll notice from a tracklisting with titles such as Don't Touch Me There, Endless Love and Roll Over Lay Down; but anyone who's seen the series won't be surprised. In fact, when Kim criticises the inclusion of Status Quo's Roll Over, Kath refers to the lyrics as being 'pretty'. Party Tape offers the best and worst of music's colourful past, all bound together with a tasty dose of irony. Even if it's a crap song, you can be sure it's so bad it's good.
FALLS FESTIVAL VOL. 1

The Falls Festival is synonymous with the passing of each year and the two-day event, now a national tradition, has been in existence for more than a decade. The Falls, a 38 track compilation, is the best possible celebration of the music, both local and international, that has turned Lorne, Victoria into an unlikely Mecca of live performance. The Falls is a fitting retrospective journey through highlights of the last 11 years mixed with exclusive tracks and the best tunes of impressive newcomers. The mix of home-grown talent and overseas visitors proves the worth of our local product; especially when you see 1200 techniques on the same disk as Spearhead, The Living End and Pennywise, Jet and The Hives, John Butler Trio and G Love & Special Sauce, The Tea Party and Butterfly Effect. There's no need to be concerned about the retrospective vibe of The Falls; you'll also find exclusive tracks from Xavier Rudd, Brad, G Love & Special Sauce and Ozomatli to add a taste of the new. The other consolation is the fact that the 'oldies' are definitely 'goodies' with the majority of tracks being well-known releases from 2003. Artwork by renowned designer Ben Brown adds the final winning touch to a fitting look back at a festival that has convinced so many Australians to spend their New Years Eves in the relative wilderness of Lorne.

Well, I'm still recovering from this year's Homebake Festival so I'm in the perfect position to remember the day's festivities, including a consistent bombardment of intense performances and the obligatory serving of brilliant Australian music. The lingering hangover continues to connect me to the event. The headaches and nausea were kick-started by Magic Dirt, intensified by Spod, exacerbated by Katalyst, tortured by Gerling, condensed by Beast Of Bourbon and compounded by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. That was my personal agenda but looking at the tracklisting of Homebake 2003 instils a slight feeling of loss: the one's that got away. This disk proudly displays another progression for the local scene, which - with the current rock revival - is fast approaching the quality of the mid-90s indie boom that helped the popularity of Homebake while in its foetal stages. The pioneers are still rockin (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Church); the fat distortion of 90s acts continues to shock the youngsters (Magic Dirt, Screamfeeder, The Superjesus), quality electronic acts dragged many rock fans to the Big Top (1200 Techniques, Resin Dogs, Gering, PNAU, Katalyst); and the rock revivalists were in fine form (The Vines, The Casanovas, The Mess Hall). These acts, once again, have made a mockery of the term 'alternative' with approachable and chart-topping tunes that provide an intelligent option for music fans, so often sold tripe by the media and labels. If you're curious about Aussie music, Homebake 2003 is a perfect introduction regardless of genre. Blues, roots, rock, house, breaks, art rock, psychedelic, punk, electro, hip-hop, jazz, pop: it’s all covered on Homebake 2003.

inaugural Planet X All Time Kick Ass Trax. The cavalcade of established local and international talent, as diverse as they are outstanding, is sure to keep even the most ardent ADD sufferers attention. A mix of the fresh and the classic, these anthems require no formal introduction, drop right in and sing along right from the firing of the starters gun. See where pop princess Amiel began her glistening stint in the limelight, left totally Addicted To Bass; find out whether its over with newcomers One Dollar Short, grab yourself a pony with Spiderbait, Rip It Up with 28 Days, reach into Grinspoon's Chemical Heart, let the soothing and mesmerising voice of Placebo's Brian Molko lull you into a false sense of relaxation, before grabbing your second wind from The Prodigy's Breathe. You won't believe just how long the list of talent goes on, for cricketing fans, the tail well and truly wags, and it should be noted that the Aussie talent not only stacks up well against the internationals, it blows it off the pitch. If after 23 blistering tracks your still in the mood for some extreme action, whack on the bonus dvd, featuring 25 minutes of extreme sports. Unlike Jackass, the stars of the show are out to perform some great moves, not just break their necks; stuff that makes me want to hit the slopes again with a new Lust for Life.

GROW YOUR OWN VOL. 7

Add to basket. Normally ships within 10 days $16.95 (US $10.48) (UK £5.86)
cd

The Grow Your Own series has always been a perfect meet and greet for lovers of independent music. The real value of this series is the ability of Damien Gerard's studio to handpick the best songs recorded at their facilities and present potential stars of tomorrow. The world is fast discovering Australian music's greatest strength: the underground. Now another slab of juicy diamonds are plucked from the rough, including Women Of Troy who kick-start Volume 7 with the blistering Suckin Me Down. Flee The Capital impressed me with Knocking Your Knuckles Raw as did Intercontinental Playboys who have already garnered interest and favourable reports within the industry. The next generation of pop-punks are lining up and GYO offers NineTimesOver, MFS and NoJoel as heir apparents to follow in the footsteps of Bodyjar, One Dollar Short and Ant-Skeptic. The Panics and Angelik round off the tracklisting which is apt considering they're two bands that have obvious commercial potential; especially Angelik, led by the visually stunning Laken on vocals. Let's hope the folks at Damien Gerard Studios continue to give us an insight into the future of Australian music for many years to come.

Over the last decade Triple J radio, the 'youth' network, has ended each year with their Hottest 100, voted by their massive audience of young Australians. The mix of international and local acts is usually close to 50/50 proving the station's support -through airplay - of Aussie acts. The end result is a clear indication of musical trends and what's 'cool' in alternative music around the globe. This year 'The Js' have crammed the best music of the past decade into one box set with 9 discs. This is like an alternative music time capsule. Listening to the discs you'll see the development of major acts from their early beginnings to super-stardom and have a few melancholy moments with the music of bands that have come and gone.

ARIA may release a Top 100 each year, based on sales, but the Triple J Top 100 is a true indication of changing musical styles and credibility, based on a huge national audience of listeners. There's always a great mix of international and Australasian tunes and this year the Aussies dominated the higher rankings with strong performances by Grinspoon, Machine Gun Fellatio, The Vines and 1200 Techniques. This is the true indication of what young Australians consider to be cool and a quick glance at the tracklisting provides an explanation for the cutting-edge sounds of Australian bands; Aussies have very good taste!

There's no need to take a refresher course and get familiarised with the tunes on this disc. The 20 classic Aussie tracks on Unofficial National Anthems are burnt into my skull and inhabiting areas of my memory banks which used to cater for impractical things like recognising road signs and family birthdays. Get started with the pioneers (The Easybeats), remember our contribution to pop (John Paul Young), explore the evolution of an Australian sound (Cold Chisel), reminisce about the Countdown years (Australian Crawl) and be prepared for the occasional laugh (Mental As Anything). I'm not sure if there's ever been a more comprehensive snapshot of the music that has made Australians so supportive of their local bands.
DIG

From the internet radio station of the same name comes Dig, a 19 track compilation that is so eclectic it borders on bizarre. The only binding factor of this selection is the demographic it aims at; obviously an adult contemporary market. Using the term ‘adult contemporary’ doesn't attract the sneers and laughter that may have plagued the genre ten years ago. Now it's one of the most influential and profitable factors in the global music market and the popularity of the veteran's curcuit in the US proves that fact. You can listen to Dig any time at abc.net.au/dig and hear the classics but you'll also hear the modern artists that are catering for the desires of Dig's audience. That explains why Vika and Linda claim a spot on this compilation with Elvis Costello, Archie Roach as well as Van Morrison, Wicket Beat Sound System and Gare Du Nord. The only pre-requisite for entry is an obvious appeal to a mature audience. Dig fulfils the demand of the many thousands who refuse to leave contemporary music to the kids. Why stop listening to good music? It simply doesn't make sense. Personally, as I approach the big 'four-oh!' I’m glad the ground work has been done by the folks at Dig; I won't have to sell my ghetto-blaster and take up lawn bowls.

This three disc set acts as an encyclopedia of Australian Country music, traveling the bumpy road of the genre’s development from 1973 to the present day and featuring every notable local performer. A quick look at the track listing reminds Australians that this music has been a part of our lives for many decades. The set begins with Redback on the Toilet Seat by Slim Newton, a childhood favourite and then continues to highlight stars such as Slim Dusty, Reg Lindsay, Bushwackers, Redgum, James Blundell and Keith Urban. More recent Golden Guitar winners are not forgotten and Kasey Chambers, Troy Cassar-Daley, Adam Brand, Beccy Cole and Adam Harvey are all recognized on this unique and comprehensive collection. For the American country-lovers who have cast a watchful eye on the Australian industry, this will be a special treat.

It's a great idea to release a compilation that combines underground heroes with the up-and-coming talents on the indie scene. Hopefully names like Intercooler, Skulker, Rumanastone, Rollerball and Bluebottle Kiss will attract the punters, giving the several rising stars on this disc some well-deserved exposure. The truth is, regardless of profile, the quality of the light rock and indie pop on Independence: Volume One is consistently impressive. Bands like Frost, Eyes Adrift and Tone Orange offer new flavours to a scene that appears to be thriving as the major labels start panicking. If the multi-national 'fat cats' are wondering where their sales have gone they should listen to this high-quality collection to get an idea of the talent that has passed them by; maybe then they'll stop blaming free downloads and get to work on the real problem: an inability to recognise obvious talent. Independence: Volume One has loads of gifted acts, all wrapped up and presented on one disc and is the perfect sampler for the many fans of Australia's rich independent scene.

Tim Pittman's five-year labour of love has resulted in the ultimate blast from the past for lovers of independent Australian music. With the current fashion uncovering a new era of garage rock, the release of Tales From The Australian Underground is perfectly timed for those seeking an insight into the reasons for Oz rock's international reputation. From Radio Birdman and The Saints to The Hard Ons and Celibate Rifles, this double CD hasn't forgotten any of the seminal acts that struggled within the underground scene during the last years of the dying vinyl era. Together the two CDs trace a path from gritty rock to punk to dirty swamp blues to the melodic bands of the late 80s. Soon after that time many of the acts had come into fashion but unfortunately most of the important figures had moved on to more lucrative projects or faded into obscurity. Regardless of their destinies, the rich array of talent on Tales inspired the rise of 'alternative' music in Australia, finally culminating in the current trend, which often finds the most twisted musical entities rising to the top of the charts. For the younger punters, this will be the ultimate introduction and for the dinosaurs it will be an emotional ride with plenty of laughs and the occasional look through space that can only be prompted by nostalgia. If you haven't already worked it out, I love Tales From The Australian Underground with all my heart. Thanks Tim.

ENTROPICENTROPIC

cd

Entropic’s The Remix Project brings together some curious sound explorers from the talented seething underbelly of Australia’s electronic music community. Deepchild starts the festivities with Maurice Goes AWOL (Maurices Chair Remix) and Meem continues the quality but for me the surprise of the project comes at track three when Christopher Hancock aka Monkfly raises the tempo with a skippety D&B; flavoured mix of Upholstery. Chris handed me a few burns a couple of years ago and I’ve always given them the occasional spin. Now the spaced-out journeys through soundscapes have gelled to result in a more approachable and floor-filling versions, still retaining his knack for finding choice sounds and creating texture. Mutante Frequante chimes in with a delightfully house flavoured but fu**ed up mix of House Policy that will surely make a few blondes explode on the dancefloor. I can see them now: trying to move their hips to the experimental edges and turning into screaming balls of fire. Way too confusing for blondes: that’s an official warning for Kylie fans. B.A.B.S sets the fu**ed-up-ometer to full-on before Raven uses similar sounds to a snappy rhythm that would make me dance at any time of night (or morning). Dropping the tempo to an arm-swinging pace, Why’s version of Fork is minimal but dramatic with brooding keyboard sounds; all flesh, no skin. Definitely a fave. Mt Druitt Millionaire’s Club (one of the best names I’ve heard in a while) bring the focus back to very technical house with funk bass and horns that could get hands floating toward disco balls but Magmafinder end the proceedings with a darker flavoured 4/4 track that doesn’t even bother with solid or snappy drum sounds: it’s all flat, vibrating distortion with sharp samples and a guitar that sounds like it’s howling at the moon. All in all, Entropic: The Remix Project is fun journey through many genres and moods, all bound by the impressive and inspiring originals of Entropic
UNDER THE INFLUENCE - 21 YEARS OF FLYING NUN RECORDS

Add to basket. Normally ships within 10 days $21.95 (US $13.57) (UK £7.58)
2 cd pack

What an evil plot the Flying Nun label hatched to celebrate their coming of age and crowning as the most important influence on New Zealand’s excellent taste in all things audio. 7 artists were fed through a studio to record 14 songs in one day (with a few recorded earlier) and at the end they produce this? It’s a semi-miracle. Although the 19 tracks are mainly covers – with a few originals thrown in – Under the Influence invites us to remember how good these songs were - and more importantly - still are. It’s a strong start on disk #1 with Gerling’s warped but wonderful version of The Dead C’s Crazy I Know, Stephen Malkamus mixing a touch of his own character in with the enduring melodies of The Verlaines’ Death and the Maiden...and Tall Dwarfs having a shot at If I Were You? I hope ex-Straight Jacket Fits front-man Shayne Carter was around. It’s a gem. Carter was busy though, showing his talents haven’t waned with High Dependency Unit. Disc #2 matches the reflective Chris Knox with the degenerate riffs of The D4 and they get along fine, while Garageland power-pop their hearts out and The Clean materialise to weave trademark magic; creating a full stop of distorted textures that induce a 4 minute trance. The 3Ds were a popular choice for song material with The Chills, Suprette, Bored Games and Tall Dwarves all making the cut in style. Under The Influence is much more than a mix of nostalgia with contemporary edge, it’s a recording achievement. Let’s hope Flying Nun decide to celebrate every year.
POP SCENES FROM PERTH

cd

Given the geographical isolation of Perth, the kids obviously have a lot of time to spend honing their musical talents in local bands, and the results speak for themselves; a constant stream of great bands attracting listeners' attention. This indie pop compilation certainly pulls that together, with some wonderful talents onboard, exceeded only by the rather exquisite postcard style packaging, showcasing the gorgeous Perth backdrop at dusk and setting the mood well. It's a nice mix of established acts and up and comers. A favourite of mine would have to be the upbeat-rock opening track Evil Knieval by Ikey Mo. Spencer Tracy continue to impress with their track Ocean which is a punk-paced number with some Sidewinder-esque moments. Another highlight is the female-fronted Halogen with the track Walkaway. There is no one discernable style that can be pinned on the compilation, but there is a definite pattern of mid 90's influences that flows through much of the work, which just so happens to be a favourite period of Australian rock for me.

ANTS FARM APHIDS

cd

As far as I'm concerned, House music is a plague; it's very existence inspiring me to doubt the existence of God. Thankfully, the future of Australian beats appears to be pivoting on snare drums rather than inane 4/4 monotony. Breaks collectives are beginning to thrive including The Herd in Sydney and, of course, Melbourne's Symbiotic, comprising of 10 laterally minded beat technicians and MCs that are borderline lunatics. I'm specifically talking about Curse OV Dialect who represent the only real vocal tracks on Ants Farm Aphids, the first - hopefully of many - compilations of futuristic Melbourne beats. You'll find DJ Shadow-esque jazzy and epic Breaks; some glitchy, demented cut n paste madness; and very Australian, psychotic hip-hop. Terminal Sound System's Dusted is a highlight, melding a collection of abrasive sounds to form an aurally pleasing cohesion; a good soundtrack for a walk down a dark alley. You'll find plenty of big swing and cruisers on Ants Farm Aphids, like Dengar's Arch-Nemesis which almost inspired me to buy a low-rider. Then there's Curse Ov Dialect. I thought these maniacs were contrived when they began gaining some recognition for their alterno-hop but a couple of years later I've been converted and looked forward to hearing House Of Clocks, which succeeded in inundating my eardrums with scattered syllables and scrap-book beats/samples. 20 years ago this combo would have been quietly locked away where they could develop basket-weaving skills; in 2003 they represent some of the most innovative hip-hop sounds in the country. The album’s closer - Dan's Shoes And Reference Texts - is a 7 minute trip through a multitude of atmospheres, driving the listener through soundscapes of mystical, brooding and sometimes evil loops of gritty sounds; a perfect conclusion to this impressive - if sometimes puzzling - collection of songs. Ants Farm Aphids will definitely be on Whammo's high-rotation list.

In light of the recent surge of popularity for Country music, it’s interesting to note that 2TM (Tamworth radio) kick-started the Golden Guitar awards to revive the genre after the emergence of rock n roll. Yep, they’ve been flying the flag for local Country for three decades. It’s a startling fact when you glance over the tracklisting of this compilation and see the wealth of talent on offer. The Winners 2002 contains 31 amazing tunes ranging from bush ballads to contemporary hits and proudly highlights the riches of our local industry; people like Kasey Chambers, Beccy Cole, Slim Dusty, Try Cassar-Daley, Catherine Britt and Adam Harvey. Put simply, it features every current star of Australian Country and is a great introduction to overseas lovers of the genre.
