History Following a tradition set by the likes of The Executives, The Affair, New Dream and The Zoot, Sydney-based Autumn was unashamedly a pop band. The band's debut single `Mr Henry's Lollipop Shoppe'/`Today' for EMI/Columbia at the start of 1970 set the tone for subsequent releases. The band's second single, `Yellow River' (on Chart), was a cover of English band Christie's hit. The song was also covered by Melbourne band Jigsaw and the two shared a joint national #1 hit in August 1970.
Three more pop singles on Chart, `Looking Through the Eyes of a Beautiful Girl'/`Song to Raymondo' (#3 in Sydney, November 1970), `She Works in a Woman's Way'/`Midnight Special' (a collaboration with cabaret singer Dave Allenby; February 1971) and `Miracles'/`Lady Jane' (March), and the album Song to Raymondo saved the band from becoming a one-hit wonder. Autumn also shared an EP with Barrie McAskill and Levi Smith's Clefs called The Best of Whisky A-Go-Go on the Chart label. The Autumn tracks were The Beatles' `Day Tripper' and Jimmy Webb's `By the Time I Get to Phoenix'.
In April 1971, Allan Marshall (guitar; ex-Hot Cottage) replaced Jacques. The new line-up issued the singles `Falling'/`Miracles' (#10 in Sydney, May 1971), `Goblin's Gamble'/`Lady Anne' (July) and `Just Couldn't Believe It'/`Bye Bye to You' (September), the EP A Patch Of Autumn and the album Comes Autumn (all on Warner). Charlie Wright (piano, organ; ex-Harry Young and Sabbath) joined at the end of 1971. Autumn travelled to the UK in 1972, but split up six weeks after arriving in the Old Dart. McMurray, Beatson and Marshall formed Mecca, moved to Canada and went on to join -Can-adian band Wireless. That band issued three albums of bluesy hard rock, Wireless (1976), Positively Human, Relatively Sane (1979) and No Static (1980), on the Anthem label. Romeril ended up in Italy for a time, recording under the pseudonym of Andy Foxx. Romeril and Graham re-formed Autumn briefly in Sydney during 1976 to minimal response. The new line-up comprised Dave Hallard (guitar), James Caulfield (keyboards) and Con Westaberg (drums). |
