History That Australia's conservative national capital, Canberra, should give rise to one of the country's first death metal bands in Armoured Angel has long been cause for amazement. The band's earliest influences included UK bands such as Motorhead and Venom. Armoured Angel's cassette demos, Wings of Death and Communion, reached metal fans across the world and garnered favourable reviews in UK metal magazines like Kerrang! and Metal Hammer. Wings of Death was later issued in the UK as a 12-inch EP by CCG Records.
At the start of 1993, the band played on the Sydney bill of the inaugural national Big Day Out tour. PolyGram's development label Id issued the CD EPs Stigmatyr (December 1992) and Mysterium (April 1994), which further displayed the band's brutally heavy sound. The band supported international death metal visitors Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower and Carcass. In 1995, Armoured Angel toured the UK, Europe and America. For many years, Armoured Angel was one of the driving forces behind Canberra's annual Metal for the Brain benefit concert.
Armoured Angel broke up in 1997 following an attempt to record a new album with UK producer Jaz Coleman that was never completed. Bass player Glen ‘Lucy’ Luck decided to reform the band with new members, Yuri (guitar) and Steve (drums). The new line-up issued the album Angel of the Sixth Order in July 1999. |
