Website Audio

Ever dreamed of starting your own band and making it big? Well, that's probably not going to happen, so get over it already. However, that shouldn't stop you from making and/or enjoying music. And as it happens, the Web is a great place to pursue your musical fancies.

A few years ago, only the technologically savvy were able to dabble in the online music scene. These days, lots of people are swapping MP3 files and setting up streaming servers to broadcast music and other audio off their websites.

So if you want to give your site some real pizzazz, it's possible to set up your own online radio station. Or you could simply post some audio files that you created on your synthesizer or that old trombone that's been sitting in your closet since 7th grade. All it takes is some technical know-how and a little creativity. .

>>> Downloads <<<

The best way to put music or other types of audio on your website is using MP3, a compression format that scrunches files down to manageable, Web-friendly sizes. That way, people that visit your site will be able to either download or stream the audio and listen to it in whichever media player they use.

"MP3"
MP3 is the technology that made online music the phenomenon that it is today. So if you don't understand MP3 or how it works, this article will get you up to speed.

"Media Players"
In order to listen to online music, you need to have a media player that will decode the various formats in which audio is captured for the Web. Most of these players are free, so you might even want to install more than one and compare them. Or you could just read this article, which compares them for you!

"File-Trading Roundup"
Even if you don't want to set up your own website for music downloads or streaming, you can still get in on the action by using a file-trading program.

>>> Streaming <<<

Streaming audio has made its way to the mainstream Web, and can be found on just about any news and entertainment site out there. But you don't need big bucks to get in on the game. If you want to serve out a limited number of simultaneous streams, there are free and cheap software options available. You just have to know where to look.

"Streaming"
A cool way to put audio on your site is using a streaming server. Then people don't need to download files, they just listen to them stream off of your site. Using free software, you can set up a streaming server without too much hassle.

"Streaming Tutorial"
In this tutorial we'll get you up and running with Shoutcast (version 1.7), a common (and free) server for streaming MP3 music files.

Hints, Pointers, and Tips 'O the Trade

1. If you're going to rip your own MP3 files, make sure you get a program that has "variable bit rate encoding," which is a good way to maximize sound quality and file size simultaneously. In variable bit-rate (VBR) encoding, the software analyzes the data and determines the optimal bit rate for encoding each frame of sound.

2. Be clear about your purpose in streaming and adjust your bitrate accordingly. If you want dialup users to be able to browse while they listen then, sending a 56kbps feed will result in broken-up audio and slow-loading Web pages. Use 16kbps instead. It doesn't sound as good but it won't inconvenience dialup users.

3. Looking for some good music for summer listening? Seventies fashion is coming back, so seventies music can't be far behind. Think Foghat, Bee Gees, and Funkadelic, and you should have your bases covered.
